Anyone flown out of there recently. We are booked on AirTran out of there and everyone I tell says "really?? they have an airport there?"

I'm getting kind of spooked.................please tell me its an actual airport!

No need to worry, in fact Rochester Airport is very much like Buffalo's - modern, clean, easy to negotiate, and a pleasure to use.

By the way, it's somewhat of a surprising question - Rochester is a city of about 1 million people - if it were in Ontario it would be right up there with Ottawa in comparable size, and bigger than any other Ontario city except Toronto....so of course it would have an airport! (excuse the jab - its meant to be a friendly one - I know Cdns like to tell me how little Americans know about Canada - I find it works both ways though)

Doesn't the city of Rochester have a population of around 220,000 or are you combining all of the neighbouring townships as well? We've been there for several hockey tournaments and it really doesn't seem very big at all. It's a really nice place for a tournament!

You're right. The ignorance goes both ways.
I had no idea that Rochester was so big. Here in Ontario, nobody ever talks about flying out of anywhere except Buffalo. I have been to Rochester once and got lost!

Thanks for the info!

Being in marketing, I'm a little obsessed with facts like this....a quick check of the World Almanac online and voila...here are the 3 biggest MSAs (metropolitan statistical areas) in NY state (2000 census)

1. New York City 21,199,000 (MSA incl NYC, parts of CT & NJ)
2. Buffalo-N Falls 1,170,000
3. Rochester 1,098,000

Agreed, though, Raw-cha-cha (as we like to say) has a great small-town feel, though it is home to 2 biggies in the Fortune 500 - Kodak & Xerox.

I think you may have set yourself up for controversy by saying you're "obsessed with facts", as you've mis-stated some. It's important when comparing population to compare like vs like (ie compare cites or metropolitan areas, and not both.

For example, the population of Rochester is 220K, while the Metropolitan Rochester area is over 1,000K (this population includes several counties around Rochester). However, there are many cities in Ontario bigger than 220K, and many metropolitan areas in Ontario larger (or the same size as) than Rochester's 1,000K (your fact that Rochester would be the second largest city in Ontario).

....controversy? Hopefully not...I consider the metro area of a city that I visit to be the guage of how truly big a place it is....and not to argue, but only Ottawa and Toronto exceed a cool mill in their metro areas in Ontario...this is easily confirmed by any quick google on the subject - I think Hamilton is next largest in ON

...back to airports for a minute, as a frequent traveler who has logged over two million miles in my career - I can generally get a sense for how big a place is by its airport size- Toronto obviously is a very large city and it shows, NYC is served by 4 busy airports, Roch and Buff and Ottawa's are all about the same size (appearing small and managable to most)....then you go down to what I call the fun little airports (ever fly to Sudbury or London, ON) - tiny! Nothing wrong with that -that's just the way it is - and its the tiny ones that are the most fun (if you like puddle jumpers etc...)

And to the the original poster who had never heard of people traveling to Roch Arpt to catch a flight - well from Canada you wouldn't generally do that as Buffalo is simply closer...
