Road trip via route 81

Hi There,
We’re new to forums and we’re planning a trip but wanting to drive. We’d like to take the scenic route from the New England area and make a stop to visit friends in NC, before venturing on to Disney. Any advice on kid friendly places to see or stay at along the route? Many Thanks!

Not sure on how you plan on getting to I-81 as there are a couple choices depending on where you are leaving from in New England. You can take 95 (either through NYC or over the Tappan Zee) to I-78 to I-81 or I-84 and pick up I-81 south in Scranton.

A few I can think off of the top of my head are:
Easton PA off of I-78 there is the Crayola Experience.
Outside of Harrisburg PA off I-81 is Hershey Park
Not exactly right off of I-81 is Gettysburg PA

Off of I-81 in VA is Natural Bridge in Natural VA

If NASCAR interests you on I-77 in NC before you get to Charlotte are a lot of the race shops of a lot of NASCAR teams and those are free to visit.
Also Charlotte Motor Speedway is is about 15 min off of I-77 and they offer tours. Looks like they currently offer a tour where you can drive your car around the bottom of the track. There are also a few race shops near CMS.
