Hi,

Traveling solo from North Carolina to Vegas this summer. What stops are must see's along the way? I have the option of driving straight through in about 4 days or stopping along the way and taking a week. What stops do you suggest? I don't mind going a little out of the way, just not too far.

So far the only thing on my list is the Grand Canyon -
Any ideas?
Thanks

Wow, you are covering a lot of ground! I would stop in the Rocky Mountains for sure--beautiful. What major cities are on your route? I would definately break it up and not try to drive all the way through. There is so much of America to appreciate!!

That route was part of my trip last year. Some places I really enjoyed were:

New Orleans

Austin

San Antonio

Carlsbad Caverns

and of course the Grand Canyon

If you're traveling on Route 40 in Arizona you might want to stop in Winslow and get your picture taken standng on the corner in Winslow Arizona. :)

As a HUGE Eagles fan I made a mental note to make it out there one day lol

You should visit my favorite road trip forum/discussion board here at Road Trip America. They really give great advice and have trip reports probably from very similar routes.

When we drove I-40, one stop was the Memorial to the bombing of the Federal Building in Oklahoma City. Quite a sobering sight. Also, the Cadillac graveyard near Amarillo, Texas.

one warning about Oklahoma--not the best roads and you pay tolls all the way through the state.

Regarding the roads in Oklahoma, only from Tulsa to Oklahoma City are tolls (if going on 40). It's not that much and you can avoid by driving Route 66 but it's side roads and a lot slower. Roads are ok. On 40 in the panhandle of TX there is a huge cross that alot of people stop at. Amarillo, if you eat steak you will see the billboards. Lots of places to pull off in NM to see the red rock bee hives (can't remember what they are called), Arizona-Grand Canyon, Sedona.
