Road/Route That Connects I81 with I95 at Fredericksburg, VA?

Years ago Mapquest or some such site plotted a route south for us that had us take I81 from Pa,through MD and WV, eventually leaving I81 to hit I95 around Fredericksburg, VA. I'm considering going that way this summer, but I don't know how to get from 81 to 95. I'd appreciate any advice on what route best connects these two so that we hit 95 at Fredericksburg, VA. If it matters, we'll be leaving North East Pa around 5pm on a Tues so we'd be down in Va well into the evening.

You can follow 81 to 66 to Fredericksburg, I believe. I'm not sure if that's a good way or not, since we mainly travel on the east side of DC. I know a lot of people I work with in VA complain about 66, but don't know how their commutes are related to your drive.

I think there may be better ways. Why not check on the 2000+ miles driver thread?

Probably the easiest way to get from I-81 to I-95 near Fredericksburg, VA is to get on I-66 near Strasburg, VA, take that 25-30 miles and then get on US-17 (also called Winchester Road). You get on US 17 from I-66 before the DC area traffic really gets to be a factor, and US 17 is a pretty decent road. It goes through some small congested areas before getting to I-95, but it's a 4-lane road.
