Bankruptcy is imminent. Maybe they’ll be able to make another go after avoiding liability to their creditors. Silver lining: would love a 5 point blanket on the cheap!

...and there goes department store shopping in Canada. :( If The Bay goes down there will be no options at all in between WalMart and Nordstrom; one of which is too cheap and the other too expensive.

Is Hudson's Bay owned by Dayton Hudson's the same company that owns Target in America? Because I have heard of Hudson's Bay and to my knowledge they are the biggest department store chain in Canada and it's been known as Canada's answer to Macy's

No.

I think Hudson’s Bay owned and killed Lord & Taylor in the US.

So are all the Bay stores closing, or just reorganizing under bankruptcy?

I love shopping at the Bay. We have a big store in Montreal. I find I don't need to shop quite as much any more. Less gifts to buy, less clothes etc. I read somewhere that they may try to close the non-productive stores and concentrate on the balance. They have been closing stores in the last few years. Not all that many of them left. The one in Montreal used to be 7 floors of everything. Bit by bit some departments have shrunk. Then they downsized and rented out the top two floors. I can't imagine going shopping downtown without the Bay. Especially over the holidays.

You have Nordstrom ?

Wal-mart and The Bay are pretty much all we have. I must confess that I don’t do a lot of shopping in-store at either. I sometimes order online and pick up at The Bay, as we have one in my city, but it’s small and meh.

I know, this must be Fairview ?

Yes, Nordstrom and Holt Renfrew but honestly, I don't shop at either one of them. We had a Nordstrom Rack for a while that I did frequent and we had Saks Fifth Avenue for a few years; both have since closed.

We have a Holt’s downtown as well. I’ve been once. I couldn’t afford to shop there. My husband bought my Louboutin shoes there for my 40th, and I still want to kill him 😂

Wow, A Saks too. I’m not 100%, but don’t think we have that either. I miss Sears the most.

I just checked, the closest is NYC LOL

Nordstrom actually shut down all their Canadian stores in 2023. If The Bay closes forever, then the only non-Walmart way to shop for anything really is online.

You’ll be going through a lot more hassle returning clothing since you can’t try clothes online. You gotta go IRL for that.

Hopefully they can rebound, won’t be easy. We like the Yorkdale location and seeing the motorcycle parked inside.

You could be right - maybe it's Nordstrom that closed and Saks is still open. Both were anchors in our city's largest mall and that mall houses a very big Bay as well. There are 5 Hudson's Bay stores in town; all in malls, and the impact of losing them will be pretty significant. I know of no other similar store that could take their place. Some of the old Sears locations here are still vacant and they've been gone for 8 years. :(

Wow, yeah, me too. I grew up in a remote Northern community and practically everything I owned came from the Sears catalogue. Over the years it was just natural that it would be my go-to place for anything that needed to be just a little nicer than you could get at Zellers. Losing both of those outlets was a huge blow to shopping options and I'm still sad about it. :( For a few years right after, I did quite a bit of on-line shopping from JC Penny and Macy's, which were both quite comparable to Sears merchandise but of course, our brutal exchange rate now makes that totally impractical.

Hudson's Bay files for creditor protection, intends to restructure

Thanks. I guess some marginally performing stores will close but hopefully the chain will survive.

Are there still small Bay stores (not mall sized) in less populated smaller cities?

Just read that Hudson's Bay still have 80 stores in Canada. 36 in Ontario. I guess some will be closed.

The downtown store in Montreal is in a big building of their own. At least when you shopped there, you could find almost anything that you needed in one location. If they disappear, it's going to get a lot harder to find things. I like to try things on. I have ordered a few clothing items on line but its usually when I tried something on in the store but need a size that they don't have.

As Mommasita says: Can't afford Holt Renfrew. I went in once when much younger. Felt out of place, like I certainly didn't belong there, saw the prices and left by the side door.

Hopefully the downtown store will be one that stays.
