Does anybody have any baby with rice allergy? And has WDW been able to accommodate your situation?

DD has rice allergy right now (so far that we know of). I'm hoping she'll grow out of it but I don't want to have a problem when we're on our vacation. We'll be going on her first b'day and I would hate for her to be sick during it.

I know it's rather strange to have rice allergy, I've done research online and it seems that not very many people has it. So I'm curious if any of you has the same problem.

Thank you!

Hi and :welcome: to disABILITIES!

If you click on where it says "disABILTIES" at the top of this page it will take you to the Index. One of the top items is the "disABILTIES FAQ" which will gives lots of useful information. If you go to Post #3 annd scroll down to the area on Dietary Restrictions you will see lots of links and suggestions.

Or, if you want an easier route to the FAQs, click on the link in my signature.

Thank you for the link!
Unfortunately I can't find any rice allergy information there with the search function... :(
Maybe someone could help point out where the info might be?
Thank you again. Appreciate the help.

If you are making advance dinning reservations then you should alert the person that your child has a food allergy. That is the first step we always take. You can also email the special diets department and they can send you information and help you out as well. I do not have the email address with me, but I'm sure someone can post it for you. You can also bring snack into the park for people with special dietary needs. Just tell them at the check point. I hope this helps you some sorry I could not give you any more informaion

Thank you so much.
I will send the email for the special dietary needs and bring some snacks :thumbsup2 I'm just curious to see if there are other people out there with the same condition. Since it seems to be really rare here. :headache:

We don't have a rice allergy, but a dairy one and at the time of our trip and egg one.

Disney is the place I feel safest taking my DD to. Just make sure your server knows and the chef will come out. We had special plates made for her in buffet restaurants, a special dessert at O'Hanas, it was just wonderful (aside from a slow start at our first meal where we waited forever to talk to the chef with three hungry kids.)

Hi

I have a DD with a food allergy.

Although its not rice hers is to dairy and wheat.

I have always experienced fanstatic service from not only WDW but on DCL as well, and most of the time the chefs go out of there way to accomodate allergies.

Thanks everyone, it's going to be her bday when we go. I would love to get her a cake but I'm too afraid because I don't know what they put in there y'know?

Oh well, maybe we'll get lucky and someone could come up with a cake that wouldn't make her sick :)

I don't think you'll have any trouble getting getting a birthday cake w/out rice flour or any other rice products. That should be easy for the chef to confirm.

We'll be at disney this month with my 11mo who is allergic to wheat, dairy and egg. I chose to bring all her food just to be safe. She's not eating a ton of food yet so it won't be too difficult and it'll be one less thing to worry about.

I'm intollerant to rice. Rice isn't hard to avoid. It only becomes difficult when you add in a gluten issue since most gluten free foods contain rice flour. Not too many standard products have hidden rice; it's generally easily visible like with chocolate that contains crispy rice. I don't know her level of severity so I don't know how careful you have to be with cross contamination. Special Diets can help you with figuring out which packaged foods have cross contamination risks (they may just provide the manufacturer or they may have a list; I don't know since I'm also gluten free so pretty much all pre-prepared foods are unsafe for me).

As everybody else has said, contact Special Diets. You should be able to order a birthday cake that is rice free. I'm not sure if they'll just use a regular one or if they'll have to special make one due to cross contamination (I'm not sure if there would be a cross contamination issue or not). That's something that the chefs will need to determine. You might even be able to get her one of the chocolate Cinderella slippers, though other than it looking really good in pictures, she certainly won't remember it.

Oh goodness... your poor baby. Sorry because this is going OT a little but how did you figure out she's allergic to wheat, dairy and egg so early?
I found DD allergic/intolerant to rice because of rice cereal. So it was pretty early on. After that I pretty much quit giving her any grain whatsoever. I didn't have the heart to watch her get so sick... :guilty:
Because of that DD has pretty much been on bmilk, fruit and veggie diet only. No grain. Only recently we've been able to add a little oatmeal.

It is so frightening to wait for the allergic/intolerance reaction everytime we added a new item to her diet. :headache:

Hi clanmcculloch,
Thanks for posting. I take it you didn't get over your rice intolerance then.
I am crossing my fingers that DD will grow out of it sometime in the future. To not be able to eat rice is just so sad for an asian kid... :sad2:

You mentioned that rice allergy isn't so hard to handle, as she grow older I sure hope so. Unfortunately right now for babies, LOTS of baby food is rice based. There's either rice flour, rice this rice that. Unless you go with strictly single fruit and veggies option. DD and I found out the hard way that mango smoothie baby food has rice flour in it... :headache: After that I never miss reading ingredients list before feeding her... I felt so bad for her.
I even found that some loaf of bread contains rice flour... yikes!

Anyways, sorry to ramble on. I just needed to vent a little... :flower3:

My intollerance wasn't clear when I was a baby. I never had the typical symptoms. My doctor and I didn't figure out any of my intollerances until my early-mid 30s by which point I had developed a bunch of autoimmune conditions and nutritional deficiencies and neurologica issues caused by my intollerances. We also didn't figure out that either of my kids have intollerances and allergies until around that same time. For them, the intollerances tend to be more neurological and lesser GI and skin problems with delayed reactions so we didn't deal with this when they were infants.

When they were little though, I really didn't like using a lot of the baby foods anyway so I guess that's part of the reason I didn't think about those being issues. I did use boxed cereals but for fruits and vegetables I just cooked them myself and tossed them in my mini-chopper. By 1 year old, they were 100% on table food. We didn't realize that the cereals were causing any problems. Do formulas have rice? I know they're difficult for corn allergy sufferers but I would wonder about rice as well.

Have you checked out the Beach Nut line of baby foods? They have a really good reputation for not adding in a bunch of unecessary fillers and being allergy safe.

I never even thought that breads might have rice in them. I wonder why? Like I said, I can't have gluten either so I'm off all breads. I do know that gluten free breads and baked goods pretty much all have rice flour since it's the gluten free flour that's closest to processed white flour in taste and texture.

Vent away!!! It's difficult having to deal with this. I'll never understand the need for companies to add all sorts of unecessary ingredients into products. It is extremely frustrating.
