I'm debating booking spirit for our august trip....haven't flown them in over 10 years and have a bad memory of an all day delay. What are your experiences? With delays...schedule changes...fees? Right now they are the cheapest as my other options are only Delta and Airtran...both high. Does spirit ever drop prices much? Right now I'm looking at $1588 for 6 tickets...100 each way.

We always fly Spirit out of detroit. I would wait to book, they always come down. In August you should be able to fly much cheaper!

Spirit is a no-frills airline. One of their aircraft types has seats are closer together than on any other planes, and they do not recline, so that they can fit more passengers. You will pay for *anything* extra---not only checked luggage, but also carryons larger than a personal item.

That said, they can get you where you want to go, and are reasonably competent at it. I would not fly them, personally, but if you are on a very tight budget, they can be a reasonable alternative, and are preferable to the "scheduled service charters" like Allegiant, etc.

Our tickets for the 6 of us were $54.90 each roundtrip out of DTW! We paid about $330 for the 6 of us to go to MCO! Join the $9 fare club, sign up for emails and stalk the site daily when you get closer to the trip! :) We have never paid more then $120 RT and we have been going every year!

I did have to laugh b/c my very 1st experience w/ Spirit was when they were brand new and we had an all day delay also! I wonder if it was the same flight ... LOL. We have been flying Spirit for years and besides that one time have never had a major delay ... maybe 30ish min etc here and there.

We flew Spirit from DTW in October. No problems. You just have to be REALLY aware of the fees. Carry ons have fees and their checked bag weight max is only 40 pounds. The seats are alsontighter than any other airline. DH and I packed very light and were able to get 4 days worth of stuff in 2 personal item sized bags. You could possibly get killed by the fees if you're going with 6 so make sure you factor all that in when considering price.
