I was lucky to find an opening in last night's 10 pm Return to Sleepy Hollow event. I think this was one of the best events Disney has put on in a long time and I can't recommend it enough. (I will add all pictures at the end)
It is held at Fort Wilderness at the Tri circle D Ranch.
We arrived about 20 minutes early and followed the signs to the barn. At the entrance there was a small spooky graveyard set up and a little display with a photopass photographer. Once you entered the barn there was a small table set up. You signed in here. If you were VIP (I was not) you got a little black bag stuffed with candy. Everyone else got to pick candy out of a box (the same candy you can get at MNSSHP). We were all highly encouraged to take as much as we wanted. Then you get a full size bag of popcorn, they had different kinds like kettle corn, cheddar cheese and buttered.
There were maybe 100 chairs set up in the aisle of the stable. VIP had about the first 10 rows and had nicer chairs and more space. The rest of us had regular folding chairs. There was a pull down movie screen about halfway thru the stable. It was so cool, we got to watch the movie with the horses! They were all in their stalls around us.
I walked around and checked out the horses a bit and saw our favorite, Kahn. I talked to some of the stable cast members about him. He is one of the headless horseman's horses (his stage name is Daredevil). This is his last year at Disney, after this he will be adopted out. One woman has been on a waiting list for him for 15 years!
I thought it was awesome we got to watch with the horses. 2 minutes until 10, a countdown started on the screen and then we got to watch Disney's cartoon Ichabod Crane. It was very enjoyable. One of the horses, King, even put his head over his stall and was watching with us.
I was so happy we were inside the barn, I didn't know where we would be watching so I'd brought a couple blankets, it was in the 50s, very cold and windy. But the barn was actually really cozy.
The cartoon ended and it was time for the main event, meeting the headless horseman and Daredevil!
Before the cartoon had started I was chatting with a woman who was by herself next to me. We were trying to figure out where we'd end up doing the meet and greet. I said I hoped they'd do the most dramatic thing I could think of, and that would be to raise the movie screen and have them be standing there. Well..that's what they ended up doing and looked so awesome!
They turned out all the lantern lights and played dramatic music and the screen rose up and there they were, standing with fog rolling out and it was very cool.
VIP got to go up first for pictures and we just went row by row. We were in the first row of regular ticket holders and we only had to wait about 5 minutes. There was a photopass photographer and a cast member who would take a pic with your camera. I told her not to use the flash (I have a pixel) but she did anyway. It came out ok, but I'd have preferred the flash off.
All in all, the event was amazing! I hope they do it again next year. The only weird thing was that there were several empty seats, yet I had to call over and over for about a month to find a cancellation. I wonder if a lot of people cancelled last minute or didn't show.
Even getting there was a bit spooky, it was dark and you had to follow the signs.
You got to see the Cinderella coach and kid ride ponies along the walk.
The graveyard outside the stable.
The horse's cast member name tags had even been updated for the occasion:
