After over a decade of employment at the same company, I regretably find it necessary to update my resume. I am still working, but the future of the company is grim at best. We have a trip to the World planned in Sept (inexpensive- airfare already purchased, tickets still good from last year), and I would like to get my ducks in a row to agressively look for a new job after that..unless I have to sooner. I have some resume polishing questions hopefully some of you can help with.
- I have telecommuted for 8 of the 15 years I have worked for my company, which is located in another state. Should I reflect this on the resume?
-The most extensive and relevant experience I had for the position I would be interviewing for occurred before I started telecommuting; the more recent experience is in the same field, just a level lower. Would it be wrong for me to list the more relevant, but no longer occurring, duties? It is in the same company, just the structure and reporting requirements of the entire company changed.
-All of my work experience post high school to present (about 23 years) is in my field. My resume currently fits on one page with the employment and college data included. The earlier positions just list co name, title, and dates. Should I remove any of it?
TIA!

I'm sure others will have better recommendations, but re: telecommuting, you might want to include it in your cover letter to demonstrate your ability to work without direct supervision, etc.

I think showing your promotion within the company is important on a resume. That your organization would think highly enough of you to promote is a :thumbsup2 to you.

Because you've worked so long at one company, you could remove the rest, but this demonstrates your commitment to your field of practice. I would hesitate to just list out name, title and dates -- you want to include accomplishments if you can.

If you want to remove, you can include a general statement in your cover letter about your previous accomplishments.

Best wishes.

With 23 years of experience, it is fine to have a 2nd page to your resume. The one pager is fine with someone with less experience. I agree with the PP that you should highlight the telecommuting on your cover letter. I would also take time to highlight those skills you had in your previous position in the cover letter. The resume should list all your positions, skills, and accomplishments in each of those positions. I also agree that showing a steady career progression through the company looks really good on the resume.

Good for you for taking a proactive approach! I faced the same situation about 2 1/2 years ago. It took about 6 months and I ended up finding a much more fulfilling and better paying position in an area I really wanted to move to. 6 months after I left my old company, my position was eliminated. I was able to control my own destiny and did not find myself in a panic situation.

Good luck!

References. Make sure that you contact your references first, and ask them for their permission to use them as references. Make sure you have up-to-date contact information for each reference. If your job search is prolonged, check back with your references on a regular basis to ensure your contact information is still correct.

I disagree on the two page resume. Stick to the one you have. A mentioning of the telecommuting in the cover letter is not a bad idea...not sure it needs to be in the body of the resume.

I would continue to list those one line early job experiences...it shows the breadth of your experience outside of one company.

I think it would be fine to continue to list the previous duties and the current duties under your current position...clearly thing will ebb and flow over 15 years in a job. You can be more detailed in an interview if the need arises.

Oh man, I'm the same boat, only no more employment as of yesterday. After 8 years with this company and assuming it would the company I worked for forever I'm updating my resume too. :( So, I am going to watch this thread for suggestions on how to make it look good and keep it to 1 page........

good luck OP, I hope we both find something amazing and soon!
