We are heading into the city for our annual Christmas trip - we usually just grab something to eat at any old place, but now that our girls are older they like to go to the restaurants, and this year they want to try something new. Looking for a reasonable place, that has a good variety of food (ex., not just seafood, not just bbq, etc.). DD just went to Mars 2112 with class, so that's out and we always seem to end up at Bubba Gumps (YUM!). Thanks!

Carmines! If you like italian food, make reservations though. ITs reasonable considering you share what you order. The salads are amazing! We usually order a Salad, pasta dish and meat dish like Chicken parm to share. Check out their website.

Bar American is great, its a Bobby Flay restaurant which I thought was reasonable.

I second Carmine's, but it may be next to impossible to get a reservation during Christmas season. (I called 24 hrs in advance for reservation in March, I could only get 8:30 at night!). But I'd try, Carmine's is simply amazing. Don't be scared off by the prices, the food is served family style, so you get a platter of food for that price. I recommend the country style rigatoni.

If you can't get into Carmine's, try Virgil's. It's also on 44th St., but it's never as busy. I've taken my nieces there & they love the burgers. I love the BBQ chicken, my BIL loves the ribs.

If you go to Carmines for lunch you have a better chance, same food. We did last year during christmas week and was able to get ressies a few days before. Or get there right when they open for lunch.

Forgot to mention this is for lunch. Carmine's sounds great, but I doubt all four of us could agree on the same meal, and none of us are really big eaters. I forgot about Virgil's! My DH and I went there years ago and it's delish! Might have to look into that. Thanks!

Try John's Pizzeria, it is on 44th. Great food, great prices. When you walk up to the restaurant, you think, WHAT THE HELL, from the outside, it just looks like a little pizza place with a bar. BUT... when you walk in... it opens up to this 2 story beautiful restaurant with a stained glass ceiling.

Go to the website and check out the gallery pictures:

Not sure if you can make reservations. We have always just walked in, but during Christmas, it may be busier than normal.

Becco's on 46th between 8th and 9th. AWESOME italian at great prices. And a full page of $25 bottle wines that are amazing! Make a reservation.

or Chez Josephine's on 42nd between 9th and 10th. Great french food - make reservation.

Charlie O's. It's my go to mid-town place. There's one at 45th and 8th and one at Broadway and 49th. They cover a wide enough range. Pig and Whistle. I think's its 47th between 7th and Broadway.

Both have reasonable prices and portions.

:thumbsup2 I agree!

And another fun one although it is BBQ is Virgil's! although given the choice I would pick Becco over Virgil's anyday! They also do a great LUNCH menu but dinner isn't that expensive either!

Junior's is near Times Square also but the servings are big (Not as big as Carmine's) but still pretty big

Loved Carmine's the time we got to go there.

If you want Italian...Tony Di Napoli's (I think 41st..on east side of Times Sq)

Amazing Bellinis to drink for the adults...and awesome family style italian (Better than Carmines as far as Im concerned).

Johns is a good option too..but it does get packed quickly

My advice for any restaurant near Times Sq at Christmas...is try to go at the beginning of a meal time or an off meal time...its not as packed and you won't have to wait forever to eat.

My friend who used to be a restaurant reviewer for a fairly big NYC publication sends all of his friends who ask about Times Square restaurants to Becco's.

We really enjoyed Ellen's Stardust Diner. It's a really fun place...the servers are all aspiring Broadway stars and take turns singing during dinner. It's one of those "New York-ie" type of places! ;)

If you go at an off time, you may get right in. My dh and I ate there at the end of August, it was about 4pm or so (right after our show let out) and the place was pretty empty. It started filling up as we were leaving.

Oh I second Virgil's Yum.
