We are planning a trip to WDW in late January. I know the weather can fluctuate and be very cold at that time, but are the resort pools heated when it is warm out at that time of year?

Yes, the pools are heated so that they're comfortable year-round.

I think this is one of the best things about Disney! Nothing better than a heated pool at 11:00 at night!! :):)

**Edited because I wanted to add that the Wilderness Lodge pool is the warmest one I have swam in! It feels just like bath water!! :)**

BAST, we were there this past December and January and swam every day, cold or warm. I should note that some of the pools were warmer than others. We stayed at the following resorts: Caribbean Beach, Animal Kingdom Lodge, Old Key West, Contemporary, and BoardWalk. Since we are DVC members, we also swam in the GF pools (both of them) one day while our daughter did the Pirates Cruise & Wonderland Tea Party. Midnight swims are a must on any of my vacations, so a lot of my swimming was in the middle of the night when it was the coldest outside. The "bulls-eye" pool at the Contemp was one of the warmest pools that I swam in, as was the BoardWalk's "clown" pool. I have found that the pool heaters run on timers and put out warm water at various times of the day and night. Sometimes you'll get lucky and be in the pool when the heated water comes out the water jets. Then you'll find yourself hanging out over those water jets just because it is warmer there. (As you can see, I did a lot of swimming during my past vacation.)

I have heard conflicting reports reagarding Stormalong Bay. Is it heated?

When I swam in it a year or so ago, it was warm. According to the WDW website regarding the Yacht Club/Beach Club:

Pools:
All pools are outdoor and heated
* Main feature pool -- Stormalong Bay, a three-acre mini water park featuring waterslides and whirlpools.
* Two quiet pools located at the far end of Disney's Yacht and Beach Club Resorts
* Kiddie pool
* Jacuzzi

The pools always seem to be at the perfect temperature, it amazes me. When it is warm they are cool, when it is cool they are warm, even if the temperature fluctuates widely during the day the water always feels just right. (Sometimes getting out is a problem on cold days though)

We were at the Poly in early February 2001. It was cold! But of course the kids wanted to swim early in the day and later in the day. In the morning, there was a thick mist coming off the pool and the water was warm. Only problem is getting out! ;)

The last summer that we swam at Stormalong Bay, the water was so warm that it was not refreshing at all. Not only do they have heaters, they have chillers and they definately should have used the chillers. The life guards would go in for a few minutes every hour or so to cool off and of course, there was no cooling off. I finally went to guest services, filled out a complaint and they responded. The life guards said that they had received many complaints every day, reported the complaints but nothing gets done unless the pool supervisor hears it from guests.

We found the temperatures to fluctuate greatly too! We experienced SAB and thought (in july) it's hotter than my bathtub water! Then at the GF, after the new pool was only open a month or two it was Freezing! We talk to the main desk at both hotels and they acted like this was the 1st time they had heard the reports. Strange thou, blizzard beach & tyfoon lagoon are always perfect? One thing not mentioned so far, is check the location of the pools, any pool that is located right off the lake with no wind barrier's will be freezing to get out of! The CR in dec 2001, water was great, but have your coat to put on, after getting out. I like to have a couple of options in the cooler season, like poly you have 1 pool the volcano, but its right off the beach, but if its cold out, use the quiet pool cause there is no wind factor. Also work's at SAB, the bc/yc quiet pools are wind protected. Here's to great water! ;) MKY
