I was thinking about this the other day:

If the total number of points for a resort cannot increase, what do they do when a resort expands? Like when the Treehouses were added to SSR?

The language must be written that total points cannot be increased on existing inventory. Adding units allow adding points to service them.

It is an increase in occupancy.

They can not take an existing inventory that takes 1000 points all of a sudden take 1100 points.

this is a different scenario.

adding villas to the resort (like the treehouses) means adding points to the resort total. (and for DVD, it means more pts to sell.)

They can not take an existing inventory that takes 1000 points all of a sudden take 1100 points.

just wanted to clarify that this is for the entire resort for the entire year.

any given week at a resort or any given room type or view can increase as long as there is a corresponding offset elsewhere.

Adding THV to SSr added more 2BR type units to SSR's total points. (Same thing as when they built Grandstand)

Then DVC reallocated the point requirements (because THV was popular) and made THV more points than 2BR which allowed them to lower some studio and 1BR point requirements..

There is a formula used for each resort to convert the real estate interest into the number of points. If the size of the real estate interest increases, then the number of points increases proportionately according to that formula.

For example, when OKW was first established in 1991, each two-bedroom vacation home and grand villa was allotted about 13,995 points and 23,165 points, respectively. A few years later, DVD added three more buildings to the OKW condominium association. These new buildings added 32 two-bedroom vacation homes and two grand villas. Using the established formula, these new buildings added about 494,170 points to OKW's total points.

Since OKW has no view categories, the addition of these new vacation homes and 494,170 had a neutral effect on OKW's point chart. Total points went up, but the number of vacation homes went up in the same proportion.
