My DD4 will be doing a display for our homeschool groups International Fair.

I need costume tips on something simple to make, yet depicts England.

Another group is doing a medieval display--so I would like to stay away from those costumes if I can help it.

We are going to display pictures from our trip to London and Nottingham.

Thanks for the suggestions!

You've chosen a tricky one. Wales and Scotland have very distinctive national dress, but England doesn't seem to.

I'd suggest she dressed as a Morris Dancer (although these are traditionally men). You'd need a white shirt and trousers(the trousers are sometimes a plain colour instead) and some ribbons to make a crossover sash. They also have bells tied on ribbons just below the knee and often wear a straw hat. A white hanky in each hand would add to the effect.

Do a google image search on "Morris Dancing" and I'm sure you'll find some pictures.

Thanks--maybe we should switch to Wales--we went to Cardiff as well--but don't have enough pictures to do it justice...or maybe do both Wales and England.

I picked up a Welsh Doll in Costume--wish I could describe it for you--lots of red and black on the dress and a white shirt is all that comes to mind at the moment.

This is a hard one! Don't think I can be much help, however I am in Nottingham so if you need any more info just let me know or pm me!

Good luck :) :)

I like Libby's idea of the Morris Dancer, or could she go for a "famous" English character, for example the Queen or Maid Marian??

This is 'tongue in cheek' just in case anyone gets the wrong idea.

Here is an example of current English national costume...

If you're doing a display on Nottingham, why not do Robin Hood (lots of green clothes, bow and arrow, some leather)? Just a thought...we all often dress like that

;)

Hi Lisa, I also like the Queen idea, but what about something like Mary Poppins, or just an elegant Victorian Lady. White frilly blouse, long black skirt, long white gloves and not forgetting the straw hat. Or failing that, rain coat, wellies and an umbrella!

what about dressing as a beefeater?
