is there any advantage or disadvantage to reserving gear for CC? We know we all want to snorkel together. Should we list it on our activities now or wait until we get there?

No. Not really any advantage or disadvantage. They have plenty of gear and it is set up as a come and go where you don't need to reserve a time to experience the lagoon.

Since your keeping this trip a secret, maybe you could give the snorkel gear as a gift for Christmas. Uncle Tom

There is plenty available, so no need to reserve ahead. One possible disadvantage to reserving may be if the weather or tides are not conducive for snorkeling. Sometimes if the wind and waves have been high, the snorkel lagoon can get cloudy. If you have reserved gear, and decide not to go, you may not get a refund.

We reserved for everyone, but found that the water was too cold for us to snorkel. Money wasted that trip.

That's what I was afraid of. I bought everyone a snorkel set for Christmas. If it's too cold this trip we'll enjoy them another trip.

We've never had a problem getting either snorkel gear or tubes, and have never had to stand in line for long. Our most recent visit to CC was the first time we had rented bikes, and no problem there either. Others have pointed out that uncertainty about the weather/water temp is a possible reason to wait. One reason to reserve ahead is if you know you'll want snorkel gear, floats, AND bikes. DCL offers a "Castaway Cay Getaway Package" that includes all three. My in-laws reserved that package ahead, and they saved a little money. The package price is a little more than $10 less than if you paid for each item separately. There is also an "Extreme Getaway Package" that includes the same three items + the stingray swim. The savings is even greater with that package vs. the a la carte prices -- about $25. My DD and DH did the stingray swim when we were at CC over Thanksgiving and loved it!

ETA: I was looking at the adult prices. The prices are lower for kids up to age 9.

i agree with others, basically if you don't prebook and the weather isn't to your liking, then you aren't out the $$$$
