Hi all! I'm a brand new member, I've been on the sidelines for a while and I'm already started brainstorming our first trip. I'm planning to bring my family down to Disney for ** and request a ** (maybe).

I'm wondering how reservations work in regards to points and the possiblity of renting some points (I don't want to borrow, I'm making my guest pay for the pt rental [which they don't mind]).

So my real question is this, if I'm making a reservation for ** for a ** and the points I will own at the time of check-in is less than amount needed, will MS still allow me to make the reservation? If so, by when do I need to "rent" those additional points?

Thanks in advance!

You cannot make a reservation for points you do not have.

If you are renting from another memeber they will have to make the reservation. (If you want control you will need to get a points transfer)

You will only be allowed to reserve based on the points eligible for the time you travel.

So, if your banked and/or current UY points are not enough and you don't want to borrow, then you will only be able to book what those points will cover. If you are booking at the 7 month mark, MS will sell you one time use points, up to 24, to complete a reservation.

If you need more than that, then you might want to get points transferred into your account before you book so that you can do the whole thing at once. This way, the reservation stays with you.

If you rent part of your reservation from another member, you would then have to link it to yours but would never be in control of it.

Good luck!

Thanks, that's what I thought. Is there a price difference between renting points and transferring points? Just curious since in a transfer you would have more control, I figure there is value in that.

but in a transfer, the owner transferring pts out also has less responsibility for the pts - if someone trashes a room or leaves unpaid charges on the reservation, DVC will come looking for the DVC owner who made the reservation, not the one who transferred the pts to them.

it evens out IMO.

I would still borrow the points so you can make the reservations you need and move on. If your guest is willing to pay for rental, they are likely willing to to that rental through you for the borrowed points. Worrying about transfers and DVC's direct rental doesn't make sense if you have other choices.
