Reservation for 8, showing up with 3

Will a restaurant charge for a much smaller party? We booked a hard to get reservation anticipating friends will be able to join us, but plans changed and they no longer can, but we would still want to go. I called internet support hoping they can change the "party" from 8 to 3 and she wasn't able to do so and wondering if we'll get charged for the 5 no shows.
