for a 6th grade boy. That is the only criteria. So who do you suggest he research?

Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Yukio Mishima, Chairman Mao....

What is he interested in? Sports? Stories? History? Any country he'd be more interested than another?

King Mongkut of Thailand (the King for whom the King and I is based on.)

I always like biographies of literary greats. Charles Dickens and Fyodor Dostyevsky are my favorite non-western authors.

The current Dalai Lama? Sounds interesting to me.

Here is how much help I am going to be, I thought you meant no cowboy type 'westerns'. :rotfl2:

You have all the kings of England, Hitler, Napoleon, any of the Chinese emperors to choose from also.

I'm not sure England qualifies as "non-western". My husband teaches music and when they talk about "non-western" it's Asia -- India, China, Japan, eastern stuff.

Italy, Spain, England, and Germany would all be classified as western. I could totally be wrong, but you might want to check it out.

:thumbsup2.... Another vote for the Dalai Lama. A fascinating man.

My 12yo has done some reports on Leonardo da Vinci, she's very interested in Art so it was an easy choice for her but he was also an inventor and into mathematics. A man before his time.

If England is an option there's plenty of soccer(football) players from the past

Europe isn't in the Western Hemisphere technically so it SHOULD qualify.

England is in the Western Hemisphere -- but also in the Eastern Hemisphere. The Beatles would be out -- Liverpool is in the western Hemisphere. The Clash might be allowable -- the drummer was from Dover.

I'm sure Europe does not qualify.

Sorry, I can't think of any figures other than those mentioned.

I believe that your definition of Non-Western is correct. I don't think Europeans qualify.

He likes sports, science, explorers. He also likes humanitarians. His favorite Western figures are Lewis & Clark, Harriet Tubman, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln & sports figures. The teacher insists on Non-Western because she doesn't want 150 reports on George Washington.

Wow, there are so many other ways to not get 150 topics on the same person. Tell them only one writer per person. Limit it to non-American subjects. This sounds like she is trying to do her research unit and meet some state standard on "diversity" at the same time.
DD#1 is in 6th grade and most of the boys in her grade would rather write about Pele or Marco Polo than the Dalai Lama or Gandhi. There is also King Tut, or Chaing Kai Shek (sp?), or Ho Chi Minh.
Robin M.

What about Genghis Khan? Marco Polo?

How about Sacagawea? Pocahantas, Massasoit, any of the Native Americans? Would they be considered "western" like the Eurocentric idea of "western" culture?
