Are you treated any differently as a resale buyer than a direct buyer? Sorry if this is a stupid question.

here is the only current difference:

things are subject to change at any point in the future, maybe better...maybe worse.

if you just want to know if MS or cast members "treat" you any differently as a resale buyer, then no, the service level is the same (usually great...sometimes a little iffy.)

IMO the difference is, as a DVC owner, you are treated differently than a cash paying guest. Disney needs to have repeated cash vacationers, DVC owners have to use their points or they lose them and Disney knows that you will be back.

The restrictions on resale points currrently are that they cannot be used for non-DVC Disney resorts, Adventures by Disney, or Disney Cruise Line, etc. They CAN be used for RCI exchanges.

Couple of points about those restrictions:
  • Those uses are NOT GUARANTEED to direct purchasers. They could be taken away from direct purchasers at any time with one swipe of the Mouse's pen, just like they were for resale purchasers.
  • Those restrictions apply whenever a direct purchaser sells their DVC points. So what that means is you are purchasing an automatically-devalued item. If you want to know HOW devalued, just look at the current resale prices for the home resort you are considering. That is the real value of your purchase, and you will also have some selling costs including a 10-12% sales commission.
  • Most people think the restricted uses (Disney Collection, DCL, etc) are not very good uses for DVC points anyway. The points costs tend to be VERY high for most of those options, and you'd almost certainly be better off renting your DVC points and paying cash.
The value of DVC is the use of your points at DVC resorts. Nothing else is guaranteed, and few other options offer decent value.

Because of that, and the huge differential between direct and resale prices, I really can't justify a direct purchase for any reason except possibly a very small add-on (<50 points) that you just can't find on the resale market.

When sales begin for new resorts (like the upcoming GF), there is no resale market for those points and some give that as a reason to purchase direct. My answer to that is wait 2 years and buy it at a substantial discount. If you're in a panic, gotta-have-it-now mindset, you're going to pay way more than you should. Not worth it to me, but YMMV.

We stayed twice at BLT as a cash paying guest and once this past December as a DVC owner. I have to say that I did not notice any difference in the way we were treated, and I was looking for a difference because of things I read on these boards. Perhaps it will be different in the future and if so, I will be the first to post my displeasure! For now, still  my DVC!!

Sorry to stray off topic....
In my opinion, I think most cash paying guests need a little help making their vacation extra special and CM's know that. When it comes to DVC'ers, i think they take more of the approach that we're seasoned veterans and we know our way around.
I'm not complaining one bit... i've never really experienced any "cash bias"... but i can see how someone might get the sense that we're treated a little different... cause we are.
However... i think there's another side to all that as well. I know that for our family, when we talk to a CM and they find out we're DVC members, the conversations sort of change. They open up a little more to us, in my opinion. I know some of us have developed relationships with CM's because we're DVC'ers. Not too many cash customers staying at CBR will get that. I think it's a nice trade.
