Staying in dvc room right now and love it. Should I buy dvc from disney. Or go home and buy resale?? Do I miss out on something not buying from disney?? Will I be treated differently?? The resale website say no different but want to know for sure.
Any advice??
Thanks

Fellow Pittsburgher here. Where are you staying? You have to decide what home resort you want, which could affect the answer direct or resale.

The big difference with resale is you can't use your points for the Adventurer Collection, Disney Collection (non-DVC Disney resorts & cruises), Concierge Collection. If you plan on always staying at DVC resorts, it doesn't make a difference.

DVC points are used in the most cost-efficient manner at DVC resorts. To such a degree that using the points for anything outside of DVC (including Disney cash hotels or cruises) usually costs you more money than simply paying for those choices with cash.

Since the only purpose of owning any timeshare should be long-term cost savings versus what one could attain by annually paying cash, the answer to your question is that no, you don't lose anything buying in via resale.

Members are treated precisely the same within the DVC system regardless of how they purchased. The staff at the resorts certainly doesn't care, and doesn't know, how you bought-or even if you are an owner or a renter.

The first two questions you need to answer are whether you actually will be doing Disney vacations for the next 30-50 years, and then what you can afford (which I would define as what you can purchase with cash while not imperiling any other current personal budgetary goals). Make a solid assessment of these two areas, then spend a minimum six months researching and following these boards, before you make any purchase decision.

We have gone to disney once a year for 13 years now. Looked at dvc several times. But always talked our selves out of it. We are currently at akl.

Assuming DVC makes sense for you (apparently it does) and you can afford it, it seems buying is reasonable. For most situations resale is the only reasonable choice as a new member. You're missing out on nothing of value resale vs retail and if anything, DVD is doing you a favor when they remove the options by forcing you to think of what you really get with the DVC points. NONE of the lost items (Concierge Collection, DC, DCL, ABD etc) are reasonable to buy for, esp when you'd need to buy far more points to use them. For some likely the largest loss is access to the member cruises.

Looking at your byline, looks like to date, you are a yearly visitor, you've stayed at the moderate resorts mostly, had free dining plans, AND you've recently starting taking cruises.

You are now staying at AKL, in a DVC room. If staying in that type of room is what you want for future vacations, then understand the tradeoffs. With DVC, there are no discounted lodging rates (points are points, and the charts are published), and there is no access to 'free dining plans'. So while buying DVC subsidizes your lodging each year, you do lose other things. And the subsidy is offset by the yearly maintenance fee you pay. So you need to take that into your planning.

If Disney cruises are in your future, then the direct vs. resale question does make a difference. You can't use points bought resale to cruise. This board will tell you, and rightly so, that it is not economical to use your points for cruising, pay cash for cruises. But some DVC'ers do cruise with their points. Buying direct gives you the option to use points on cruises.

We have bought both direct and resale. Resale offers a substantial savings over direct purchase. But the bump is on the way in; going forward yearly maintenance fees are the same for resale points or direct points. Once through the process, and the points are in your account, I agree with PP that there is absolutely no difference in how you are treated.

Take some time to familiarize yourself with how the club works, because the most important decisions are still ahead of you, and that is, what use year makes sense for you, and what property do you want to buy into. Good luck!

There are many aspects, pros and cons to owning a DVC interest. IMO you should wait on your purchase, spend some time learning about the product, deciding which resort is your favorite, then buy if the numbers support it.

Buying now with Disney dust in your eyes could be a mistake.

Actually, OP has stayed at value resorts. Money wise OP, you will not come out ahead if you are used to staying at values PLUS you were getting free dining. That doesn't mean DVC isn't right for you. You just have to know you will be spending more. There are ins and outs of DVC and you should be happy with those before buying in. Do you typically plan your annual vacations ahead of time or are you a last minute planner? DVC has an ending contract date, different from the typical time share. Are you happy with that? You should take some time while you are there to visit the DVC resorts to get a feel for which resort you would like as your home resort. Each DVC resort is being sold at a different price. Would you rather pay a lower point cost but have less years on your contract? Would you rather pay a lower point cost and not care what your home resort is? Do you know what UY you would need? These are things you will need to know before buying direct or resale.

Do you get the same annual pass discounts if you buy resale?

Currently the discount is the same for direct and resale owners. DVC discounts come and go, consider them a temporary perk and don't buy based on the perk. The resale restrictions only started a few years ago and they could change at anytime.

Bill,

What are the resale restrictions that you say can change at any time, please?

I am also trying to decide between buying from Disney or resale. I have actually been considering buying BLT resale and then buying Poly direct when available. Does that make sense?

Thanks!!!

Bill,

the current resale restrictions are that resale buyers cannot book disney cruises, disney hotels (like POFQ, for example), or adventures by disney trips with resale pts...and there are also a few nice hotels like the hotel del coronado in san diego that direct purchasers can exchange pts for.

none of those are a good deal (high point costs that can change significantly and extra fees) but they are used by DVC salespeople to convince people to pay extra to buy direct.

resale purchasers can still trade in RCI for other timeshares around the world (subject to availability and also not a great deal either usually...but it's nice to have options).

for over a decade, there was no difference between resale and direct purchases...so if disney decides to add perks for direct purchasers only or take away perks for resale buyers (or sometimes for both direct and resale purchasers, like the old valet parking perk), that's the risk you take.

you should buy into DVC because the accommodations are a good deal and fit how you would like to vacation at wdw. any other perks can come and go...

not to me. we don't have much info on the poly at all to know that much.

but yes, you can buy BLT resale and save money and there will likely be a discount for current DVC members who are early poly purchasers. usually (but not always) that will be the lowest direct price available for a resort, so it's not a terrible idea. (assuming poly is well furnished and themed, and that the point charts are not outrageous.)

You should go home and then decide to buy resale or direct. It's a big purchase and it will last for 30-50 years, there is no good reason to rush the decision. You can buy from home directly from Disney as well, a guide will be delighted to send you all the paperwork to sign.

I'd say that resale is a no brainer in most of the cases. There are just a few cases when a direct purchase can make sense:
- a very small contract
- not willing to wait to find the right UY and home resort combo
- a new resort not available resale yet
- one of the few resorts with a small difference between retail and resale (VGF and VGC)

Please wait to see what the Poly is all about. Current info is that DVC is building connected studios and expensive over the water 2 bedroom bungalows, no 1 bedrooms or GV's.

I also suggest that you consider an MK resort and a Epcot resort. As you vacation patterns and tastes change, you will have your favorite home resorts close to 3 parks.

We bought direct in 2012 and just added on last month, also direct. We didn't want any restrictions on the Disney Collection or cruises. It's also easy and fast when purchasing direct.
