What is the the better deal? I am looking for opinions for my boss and her husband. They are looking into the DVC and I am trying to sort out some stuff for them. I have also heard that if you buy while you are on WDW property or curise you get a better deal. Any info would be most helpful.

Thank You!

I really think it depends on what you're looking for. If you're going through resale for OKW, BWV, BCV, VWL then you'll be buying in at a lower rate per point but also a shorter time frame because these expire well before SSR and AKLV. There are A LOT of resale contract for SSR so thats the way that I would go if I were doing resale but it just so happens that I recently received a killer deal through Disney for AKLV!

Do your homework and get to know thats out there in the resale world. Then give DVC a call directly to see what they have going on. Compare and go from there!

As to attending in person at WDW or on a cruise will you be at/on either any time soon? I received my killer deal at DVC's first West Coast party but I think that was a one time big promotion. Beyond that, I dont know!

Good luck!

I went resale because I wanted a small contract which I could add to later down the line. I got a contract for 50 points a VWL. I did not want to purchase new because VWL is my favorite resort and I want to make sure i can get reservations there.

Also keep in mind that although the price per point is typically lower through resale, you have to pay more closing costs than through Disney and depending on the resort, more maintenance fees. For example, to buy into AKV through Disney right now, there would be no MF this year and only half next year. If you buy resale and get points this year, I believe you have to pay the MF. However, I think this is something that can be negotiated with the seller. Just something to think about :)

Here is what we looked at before making our decision. First, where. We knew we wanted a resort that was "sold out" or not actively selling. Then, we decided how many points we wanted. Disney requires 160 pt minimum unless AKV - if that offer is still offered. With resale you can go for less points. You will pay closing costs either with Disney or resale on that first contract - add ons for members don't pay closing directly. Then balance what special incentives Disney is offerering versus the savings via resale. You have to look at the entire package and weigh it out. One other thing is that the resale contract may have some banked points where Disney won't.

Not necessarily. If you purchase direct from Disney 1-2mos. before the end of UY desired, you will get previous years points plus prorated dues(so that means hardly any if you purchase at the end or near the end of the UY). Of course, that is only if the previous years points are available.

No one here can give you the answer as to what is best for you (or your boss) to do. All we can do is tell you what your options are. Then you have to fill in the data as it pertains to what you want. Obviously, the TSS has any size contract for any resort. If they don't have exactly what you want, tell them what it is that you want and they will eventually get it for you. What you should pay isn't exactly rocket science but, at times, it does approach rocket science. If a contract is "stripped down", i.e. this year's points already used up, then that needs to be considered. Do you pay this year's maintenance fees, etc. What deals are Disney offering. Things such as these need to be considered. For us, when we were buying, resale was a much better deal so we bought through TSS and had a very positive experience.

If you are looking for a specific resort ( not AKL) go resale.

If you just want in, go through Disney. Resale takes 6-8 weeks to process, and you may save $ per point. But, you get more incentives from Disney like developer points, and gift cards- which would have the same value as a cash ressie for $3000+. That's the way I look at it.
16,000 for 160 from Disney
11,000 for 150 from Resale

Location is one of the first decisions you need to make. Which resort do you want to buy points at.

In our case, we decided we wanted to have our home resort as BWV. Once that decision was made I checked pricing from our guide versus pricing from resale. Even with the closing costs, the resale route was significantly less expensive.
