Can someone please tell me what is a republican and a democrat? I don't need to know what you think about them. I am sorry if that sounds rude. I need to know for school. Thanks!!!

Well I guess you know that they are the political parties or the two main political parties. The parties are considered to be polar opposite. One the Democrats are suppose to be very Liberal in there political vies and the Republicans are suppose to be conservative. This doesn't mean that ever single President or ones that are running all fit that mold. There are moderate conservatives and there are moderate liberals. Those are the ones that usually end up making it as President, because most peoples views of the issues are around the middle or more moderate and not on the extremes.

I do believe a democrat is more liberal while a republican is conservative. They're are major differences but I don't want to offend anyone on the boards.

technical definition,
Republicans want more power to the people and less to the government.
Democrats want more power to the federal government and a little less to the people.

But people have long since abandoned those definitions.
Democrats = liberal
Republicans = conservative

Democrats usually like to tax more to solve the nation's problems.
Republicans try to keep taxes lower, so they sometimes get low-income voters.
Democrats have recently been known for being anti-war.
Republicans (or at least John McCain) are in favor of off-shore drilling, while Democrats (or at least Barack Obama) want to find alternative energy sources-- which would cost more, which brings us back to taxation.

Abortion rights, gay marriage, Iraq war...they all seem to be hot issues that the two parties disagree on right now.

Democrats tend to be for abortion rights and gay marriage while Republicans tend to be the opposite. There are always exceptions to this rule though.

Democrats tend to be more concerned about the environment. I find that the off-shore drilling debate is stupid, because either way it isn't going to help costs much. And we [the U.S.A] need to start drilling for our own oil to help costs.
