My son is heading to the Republic of Ireland for his honeymoon. I have over $100 in both euros and pounds. I had planned to give him the euros since there in no international travel in my near or distant future  then I started wondering about the pounds. I’m wondering if he could use them in Ireland or exchange them, and wondering how onerous that might be.

Thoughts.

:thanks:

Hi from Dublin, Ireland :)

Where on the island of Ireland will he be travelling to?
The Republic of Ireland is part of The EU and Euros € are our currency.
Northern Ireland is part of UK and not part of The EU and their currency is Pounds Sterling £.

There are currency exchange shops in Ireland, mainly in tourist areas like Dublin city centre. They will exchange foreign currency into Euros at the current market rate on that day and I think they also charge a fee. Anyone can change currency in these currency exchange shops. Tourists can not exchange foreign currency in banks in Ireland, as they will only change currency for people who have a bank account with them.

He (and his bride :lovestruc) are going to the Republic of Ireland for two weeks and renting a car but not planning to visit Northern Ireland.

I was interested in what you said about currency exchange shops versus banks. That’s helpful, I didn’t know that.

You are welcome. Banking laws and currency exchange are strict in Ireland / EU.

Im sure they will be in Dublin city centre , this the most easy to get to one, at O'Connell Bridge
No1 Currency Exchange Dublin City Centre, O'Connell Street
If they Google search the are they are in for currency exchange, they should be able to find one.

Ok not a Ireland question but did not want to start a new thread for one question. Heading to Edinburgh next May. One of our day trips from there was going to be down to Dumfries an then because of the show Doc Martin we would like to head down to Port Issac. Got to doing some research and it shows the train ride down from Dumfries was over 10 hours. Was just curious how accurate this was.

Thats about right as you will need multiple train connections and Port Issac is right in the very south of England in a rural ara. You are literally travelling the length of the island of UK.
