Reports from Jefferson Parish

Some of my family members returned to Jefferson Parish today to retrieve their belongings, and their reports were surprisingly good. 3 families live in Woodmere in Harvey (near Belle Promanade off of Lapalco). One had minor roof damage, and one had minor fence damage, but that was it. The garage door on the one with fence damage did open during the storm, and it was obvious that people had been through the house. That was my grandmother's house, and my aunt who went there is pretty sure they stole her wedding ring. :( But the damage wasn't bad at all. My aunt said the worst thing was the blood from rotting meat running out of the fridge. :crazy2:

I also have a family member in Avondale, and she also just had fence damage.

One cousin lives in a trailer house in Pearl River on the LA-MS state line. His trailer doesn't seem to be affected at all, but it did move because of the wet ground. It's about 4 feet away from the deck now. I imagine it's possible that there is hidden structural damage.

I was surprised at how good the news was. I hope that this news helps some people who might have houses in the same area.

My boyfriend's parents were returning today but didn't make it in time for the curfew so will try again tomorrow. Fingers crossed.

So glad that your family members had minimal damage. Hoping for the same results for his. I was watching the maps like mad and they seemed to just escape the path of flooding.

Kermit,

What about your uncle that your aunt did not evacuate?

We found him Saturday night, safe and sound. His nursing home, which is only one story high and next to the river, didn't evacuate until Tuesday. That part surprised me. A few people on these boards gave me a link listing all the nursing homes that the people from my uncle's home evacuated to, and we found him in one of them.

I forgot that I also wanted to let everyone know that my grandmother's cat, who had to be left behind, was also fine. My grandmother is having to go into a nursing home because the in-home care she had before isn't possible now that she's homeless, but we've found another elderly lady who's willing to take the cat in.

Thank you. I was scared at the idea of my fiance entering Jefferson to see if anything was left of his apartment. I don't feel so frightened now.

They said specifically that they never felt threatened or saw anything that made them scared. They got out a few minutes after the 6:00 pm curfew, but the police didn't say anything to them.

Power is starting to come back on in Jefferson Parrish and the water and sewage systems are starting to work. Some businesses are open, including a Walgreen's with a pharmacy. A lot of people that went back are saying they won't leave.

There is definently good news coming out of Jefferson (where I live).

My city is Metairie.

The problem is my DH's office is in N.O and it is messed up. Where will he work? We are currently with relatives in Indianapolis, IN, don't know when school will open and work resume.

We have been very lucky and thank God for that. We just miss home sooo much.

Michele

Glad for the most part, Kermit, you had good news from family members.

Kermit: Thanks for the updates. I'm glad that your family (all the way down to the furbabies) is OK.

PolyAddict: I'm glad to hear that you are safe. Is it possible to enroll your kids in school in Indianapolis while you work out getting home? A routine might be good for the kids and allow you to have more time to help get back on your feet. Has your DH's company contacted him?

Yes, we can enroll our kids, we have looked at the Catholic school here since they will honor our tuition from N.O. We plan to make a decision today.

DH's company is having a partner's meeting today, hoping for good news.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you!

My fiance is going to Jefferson today I think. Wish I could be there with him. I guess he's going with his friends. Which makes me much more comfortable with the idea. Four guys going back into Jefferson, all lived there. No one will mess with them no matter what.

I also found satellite pictures of his apartment building on google. Looks like there are large chunks of roof missing right off the building and smaller pieces throughout the rest. But its still standing. I also found his aunts house which is just fine atm.

I guess we will see what happens.

BF just heard from his mom.

The house is fine. They have some outside damage, but nothing inside is bad. What a relief. No one broke in either. His stepdad's car was damaged by water, but that's about it. So relieved.

They took their computer and other valuables and are now on their way to stay with relatives. No reports of violence or anything either.
