I am new to DVC, so forgive me if this is a dumb question-

If I have points I want to rent out, what are the pros/cons of renting them out vs just offering them for transfer?

It seems like transferring would be easier because you don't have to go thru looking for a reservation for someone, changing it, etc. But I guess the market for transferring points is smaller because it can only be to DVC members?

yup. You got it. Plus it’s one transfer per use year so you have to find someone that wants your specific home resort points to have the home resort priority

There are some limitations on transfers that make it not always practical. As was said, it's only one transfer per UY, so if you have a lot of points to transfer, the buyer might not want all of them. So if you transfer some, you may still have a lot you need to rent. OTOH, as a buyer you could be stuck with leftover transferred points if you don't use them shrewdly or bank them within the window.

I prefer the transfer because I am dealing only with a DVC owner. Once the points go, the transaction is done.

I don’t do it often though.

Transferring can be easier since it involves a call to MS and you're done. But finding someone who wants your points can be difficult because
  1. They only get one transfer in or out per UY, so you need to have enough for what they want
  2. You can only transfer to another owner (smaller pool) and they would have to want your particular home resort (even smaller pool).
  3. You cannot transfer banked or borrowed points.
  4. You want to transfer your points before your banking deadline. This is for the recipient's benefit because they can bank transferred points.

In addition to the above, some may also contemplate the possible effect of the following rule -- which is inapplicable to any rental that does not involve an actual transfer of points -- that appears in section II(6)(j) of the Home Resort Rules and Regulations:

"Club Members are expressly prohibited from receiving compensation for engaging in any Transfer activity."
