renting lenses for an up coming trip. what would u bring

I am wanting to rent at least two lenses for our up coming trip to Disney and Universal. I currently have a 40 & 50 1.8 but am at a loss in narrowing down what else to bring. I shot with a Canon 7d. I thought about a fish eye but didn't know if that was too silly. And I do want a wide angle. What would u choose?

It really depends on what's on your "shot list'. What are your photographic goals for the trip? Lenses are used to solve problems or tailored for a solution to what the shoot is going to be. An example, in your list of lenses, I don't see a walkaround lens. I would use a mid-range zoom lens. That can mean a lot on whether you want to go light (18-55 kit lens) or something more professional/heavier (24-70 f2.8). The range is wide for this lens depending on your style. Are you going to shoot any long shots such as the safari in AK. If so, then my recommendation is a zoom to 200mm. The number of lenses for this is varied also. You can go with an all-in-one lens to cover the entire focal length such as an 18-200, etc. These lenses will be "slower" and will not work as well in low light. Or, you could go with something like the 70-200 f2.8. This lens is much heavier, however with the 2.8 gives you more flexibility. I'm not familiar with the 40 that you have, but if it is 1.8 then it could work for the dark rides. The 50 can work, but I find it a little tight on most of the dark rides.

I hope you get my point. First decide on what you want to shoot and then look for the lenses that will cover that.

I think that is part of my problem. I have a walk around lens too but it's not great. Love 70-200 but wasn't sure I wanted to carry something that heavy around since the 7d is already pretty heavy. I know I for sure want a wide angle but when it comes to zooms and fisheyes I'm lost.

I use the Canon 17-55 f/2.8 for 90% of my shots at Disney. I have other lenses but I tend to use them for one "task" or another. The 17-55 is my workhorse and allows me the most flexibility as I walk about and find things I want to shoot that I hadn't anticipated or planned for.

It is known as being "L" quality glass without the "L" distinction. And the IS does wonders for my shaky hands.

I would suggest a mid zoom also. Either the 17-55 or the Sigma/Tamron version 17-50 f2.8. I would also carry a UWA such as a Tokina 11-16 or Sigma 10-20. I could get by with just those two lenses. Lately I've been enjoying the rides instead of photographing them, so the 50/40/30 could stay in the room. On our upcoming trip I plan to bring along some tele lens because I felt I missed it on our last trip.

I concur with the recommendations to bring a mid range zoom. I recently went through my shots of my last trip to WDW, and a number of my shots were taken with my 24-70 f/2.8. Personally I would also bring an UWA as WDW provides numerous opportunities for wide angle shots.

I know many folks do not want to bring their telephoto zoom lenses because of the weight...but I'm not one of them. When watching parades or shows like Fantasmic, I often like to use my zoom. The safari ride at Animal Kingdom is another opportunity where I really want a lens with some reach. Therefore I will bring two telephoto zooms with me, although I won't necessarily carry them both around with me 24/7.

Lastly, I love dark ride shots so I will definitely bring a fast prime. I am looking forward to trying out my new Sigma 35mm f/1.4.

First... what's not so great about your walk around? Knowing what you don't like about it might help figure out what lens would be best for you.

Second... I loved my 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 on my crop during my last trip. It's a great focal range for me. However, I've heard others say they feel that 28mm isn't wide enough on a crop body though. So obviously one size does not fit all there.

I always use my 50mm 1.2. I love that focal length and that lens! It hardly left my camera body last trip (if at all actually)! I may have taken a few with my 28mm just to back up a little to get the princesses and castle in. This next trip I will also bring my 100mm 2.8 for the safari. It sounds like you think a fish eye would be cool so whatever you rent I would throw it in there too. May not be the most practical, but it may give you a few of your favorite shots. Funny, I've never tried one before but I was even thinking it would be fun to have in the World!
