Is it just me or does anyone else who rents points feel guilty when they talk to MS?

My choices were to shorten my trip and rent some points or don't go. Gee, guess which option I went with! I just feel guilty when I talk to MS for renters - like I'm not supposed to be doing this. I know it's allowable (under certain circumstances) and I don't want to get into the should-it-be-allowed debate, but does anyone else feel weird about it... or is it just me? Maybe it was just the CM I was talking to.

And how do you handle making rented-reservations. Do you get all the renters info then call for availibility and book it right away or do you call for availibilty then get the renters info and call back to make the reservation? Think I should start doing it the first way...

If I were renting out a reservation to someone I can't imagine I would feel guilty. They allow it as long as you're not making a business of it. And it was going to be the way we got our feet wet in DVC...but we just went for it before giving ourselves the chance to rent.

And I wouldn't see it differently as if I were gifting a stay to my cousins who love WDW, even if they were paying me in some way.

I think you want to get all the info from the people that you can, with first choice second choice, etc etc, so you can just book when you call, b/c anything can be snapped up after you hang up.

We have recently had a lot of family medical issues and have been unable to use all of our points this year. I also felt very guilty calling MS to get rental reservations. I know it is legal but it just isn't what I ever expected to be doing (and hope that soon I won't have to do it again). I tried to have all info ready when I called MS. On a good note, I found wonderful folks to rent my points from me and feel very lucky to be working with them.

There isn't the slightest thing to feel guilty about. You are doing something that is specifically allowed under the rules. You are both helping yourself, and helping out another family. If anything, you should feel proud.

If you are seeking a reservation on an occasional basis for a non-member based on their request, it should be okay.

But if you are reserving a hot time or hot location on spec to sell to the highest bidder, you should feel guilty as everything.

I fall into the first category :thumbsup2. I just feel odd making 2 or 3 reservations for different renters because people only want 40 points here and 110 points there.

Yeah, I need to better organize myself for renting.

I, too, feel guilty when I call MS for making a reservation for a renter. We are getting hit real hard by this economy and renting is one of the ways I am going to be able to keep my DVC membership. It gives me some breathing room until the contracts my DH has starts in Oct or Nov. So I get over it. I do not plan on doing this more than occasionally. I am grateful for DISboards. It has been very easy to fine renters that have been great. It as one of the reason why bought into DVC. I knew I would have this option if a time like the present should occur. After all, I rented from a DISer before I bought DVC points.

Don't ever feel guilty if you need or want to rent your points on an occasional basis. Like others have already posted, as long as you are not making a business out of it, then try to put your guilt behind you.

If I ever face a situation where I want to rent my points, regardless of the reason, the only guilt I will have is that I won't be able to use the points for me and my son.

Not a bit,as an owner they work for us,they are my points to do with as I choose

Actually, think of it this way... you are helping a family who might be staying at one of the value resorts experience the magic of DVC! They might not be ready to buy into DVC without trying it first. So actually, you are helping DVC out because, if they enjoy their trip (and how could they not?), DVC is going to be making another sale, thanks to you!!! :goodvibes

Nothing to feel guilty about, you haven't violated anything unless you are renting for commercial purposes which you are not. Haven't ever rented out any of our points but if they weren't going to be used by us or anyone else we know we'd most likely attempt to rent them or better yet (& easier imo) transfer them to another DVC member rather than see them go unused.

:)

Thanks for the confidence boost. I guess I felt judged by MS (and for no real reason, all in my head I'm sure). I'm trying to rent 09 points before I have to bank them and before my Dec trip so they can pay for my trip!

I see no reason to feel guilty. All you owe the other members is to follow the rules in place, no more and no less. There are a few areas where common courtesy should appy, such as holding a reservation you know you won't use, but that's about it.
