Renting DVC points for BLT and paying on a monthly basis..Is it do able?

The changes to the Rent/Trade Board dried up the low-ball posters who were only on the DIS to rent/dump their points for $10 so the price has edged up.

Lol, is that why happened? Last year my dh got points for $6! Last minute of course.

Yes, but I think they are dropping a bit now that they have opened up the Rent/Trade board to those willing to pay to advertise there. So that's why I said they were higher, but seem to be coming back down. But there are still less renters there than before, no doubt. Supply & demand definitely plays a part. If you're willing to wait until the last minute (with no guarantee that there will be any) David has fire sale points too sometimes for $7-8. But they're usually for SSR and only a month out.

But the OP is not going to get BLT for Thanksgiving at the last minute. So no chance at all to get 402 points at 11 months out for $10 a point or less.

With the changes to the rent/trade board I have done my last two rentals through people I found on mouse owners and got $8 & $9 a point for my last two vacations. It helps to be reliable, have references from previous renters and of course you have to do your due diligence.

I might be remembering this wrong but I am pretty sure that you can link reservations as long as the names and type of room are identical on both reservations.

That could help you out with getting enough points.

Interesting. I've never used ***********, but I have references. :)

D&b, I never said anything aout the op getting that rate or waiting unti the last minute.

Again I would like to thank everyone for replying!

Maybe I need to take things in my own hands and look into the points. Since I'm new to the whole "renting points" I need all the advice I can get.

Here's the details of our trip next year. Our dates are check in 11/16/2012 and checking out 11/23. According to the DVC points calculator we need 402 points for our entire stay. By some of the replys finding 402 points from just one owner is going to be a tough job. If points are bought from say two DVC members how are those points applied to one reservation?

Since it seems making payments is non heard of I like the idea of 50% down and then the other 50% closer to the trip. If I have read things correctly if the BLT is a owners home resort they can book earlier then if it wasn't. Is this right and how much earlier can they book over a non home resort? I also don't want to pay over $10 a point, cheaper would be nice. I have looked on the DVC board and that seems to be the running rate per point. Can I assume I can get points for that price?

I'm sorry for all the questions, but the points system and how it works really blows my mind. I want to save some money, but also don't want to get scammed in the process. Arrive at Disney and have no room what so ever.

This is going to be our last trip as a family of 5 since our oldest will be 16 at the time of this trip. So I want to go HUGE, something he will never forget. ;)

I'm looking at the points chzarts and trying to figure out how 7 nights at BLT can cost you 402 points. Are you looking at a 1 BR villa with Magic Kingdom view? I can't even imagine how expensive of a cash reservation that would be.

I know we should not be discussing specific dates here (not allowed), but since it's already done and quoted - I agree, the # of points for the dates you posted for BLT range from 104 (studio) to 380 (2 BR). I ignored the Grand Villa.

But nothing gets you as high as 402, so OP you must be reading the charts incorrectly.

Try this calculator:

Nov 21-23 have higher points per night. that probably takes it to 402.

Well my DH and I have been talking it over and we have decided to change our dates to the beginning of Nov 2012 instead of the end to get away from the Thanksgiving holiday.

Plus we have talked about the renting points vs a cash reservation and as of right now are 100% positive we are going to go with a cash reservation. I know we can save alot of money by renting, but some things I have read on the DVC boards sort of changed my mind. Didn't realize Disney could cancel a reservation if the owner hasn't paid their dues and such. At least with a cash reservation if it gets cancelled or lost Disney will have to answer for that and have to do something about it.

We will have a AAA discount already, and hopefully by moving our stay at Disney to the beginning of our trip {we are going to Universal also} maybe Disney will come out with a code we can use.

Thanks again! I know I can always count on the great people of the DIS! :thumbsup2

Thanks for the notes! :)

Only reason I included my dates was to see if anyone came back saying those dates are going to be hard to get with points. If that was the case I would just go ahead with my original plan and do a cash reservation.

Just wish I knew someone IRL that had points. That would make things so much easier.
They probably keep it a secret.:rotfl:

I just got a solicitation in the mail to buy into DVC for BLT.
I was quoted $130 dollars a point and it is going up to $140-soon.

So, if I want to stay during Thanksgiving and I need 402 points for a vacation my investment is over $52,000. I know most DVC owners don't stay during high Holiday times, they work it and stay during value season, so the amount of points are lower. That is still a huge investment-plus you have to pay yearly maintenance fee's too, don't you?

I've rented my DVC points twice.

Both times I asked for 10% when I made the reservation, 40% when the renter received confirmation of the reservation, and the remaining 50% 60 days before the first day of the reservation. All monies were paid via Paypal and were stated as non-refundable.

No, you wouldn't necessarily need to buy 402 points. You would "need" 402/3 or 134 points. With DVC, you can bank a year's worth of points from a prior year and borrow a year's worth of points from the next year. However, that would mean you were going to WDW every three years.

Also, check out the resale market. While there are some restrictions as to use of resale points, they are quite a bit cheaper than buying direct from Disney. Right now the Timeshare Store is showing BLT contracts ranging from $90 - $106/point.
