Renting car at airport and return at WDW?

We're hoping to fly into Orlando on 12/15 and rent a car for 2 days to visit family and then return the car to WDW and stay onsite a few days. Has anyone done this? Trying to find the least expensive way that will provide us with transport to AKL. If it's cheaper to fly to the airport, can we use ME from there?

Can we also use ME to go one way? (return to airport for flight home)

Yes, you can return the car to WDW. It would depend on what company you rent with as to where you would return the car to though. Alamo and National both can be returned to either the Dolphin or the Car Care Center over by MK. Other car companies are based in the DTD hotels.

Yes, you can take DME back to the airport from your resort. Just arrange it a few days before your departure. You can't just walk up and get on a bus.
