I have just realized I am a few points shy of what I "need" for this year. since I am a DVC member, can points be transferred to me if I pay to rent them from another member?

First trip home coming up!! So excited!!

Sure, you just have to contact someone on the rent trade board that has the appropriate points available.

Yes, who knows maybe someone will send you a PM just from this post. Go on the rent trade board and see, maybe someone has just what you need.

Is it "safer" to have points transferred rather than renting them outright? Are there fees for transfers?

Thanks guys. This board is really helpful

If you need the extra points for the same trip and rented them from another member, you'd have to have them make the reservation. If they transferred them to your account, they're your points and you can use them to make the reservation yourself.

If it were me, I'd have them transferred. PLUS, some renters will sell you the points for transfer for a little less than they would rent them out and make the reservation themselves.

Plus - as potential future DVC landlord ;) - I think it'd be much better to deal with another DVC owner who understands the systems, housekeeping, etc.

Also, the transaction can be completed - and confirmed through MS - long before the vacation date, and there wouldn't be any "last minute cancellation" situations to worry about.

For the owner getting the points, as was mentioned, once the points are transferred, they get total control over them.

Close to "win-win"....

Dr. Tomorrow, does that mean they don't necessarily have to be for the same home resort to apply to the 11 month window?

Jacky, just wanted to mention that sometimes it can be a leap of faith. When I rented transferred points to another member 2 years ago, I required full payment upfront BEFORE I was willing to transfer points to their account. This is because once you transfer points out of your acct, it is 100% irreversible... whereas money in theory is refundable. I have heard of some members willing to take only 50% payment first, or even some members willing to just transfer you the points first... I'm not sure but I believe one person even used an escrow service. It is different with everyone. But thought I should mention this to you so you'll know what to expect. HTH! Good luck. :)

BTW, please take a look at the link in my sig for transfer rules and tips.

To be totally honest, I don't know for sure. IIRC, the points keep their home resort; I sort of remember posts about this, and that the then-current MS ressie system wouldn't allow "changing" the resort associated with a point.

Any experts - throw me a bone, please! :smooth:

According to the DVC rules transferred points are supposed to retain the use year and resort of the person who transfers the points.

But in reality that is not the case, at least not in my experience and having read numerous posts on the subject, not in most people's experience. For example, I have a December u/y at BWV. The points I transferred recently from another member were OKW points with an August u/y. When they were transferred, (even though technically, according to the rules in the DVC contract, this was NOT supposed to happen), they did indeed become BWV points with a December u/y.

This worked out fine for the trip I needed the points for, but if you want to retain the u/y & resort of the person you're renting from, you have to tell them when you do the transfer, and they have to do it manually. From what I understand it's a "glitch" in the system. I can't promise that everyone will have the same experience I did, but from reading numerous other posts on the subject it seems to be the norm for it to go down the way I described.
