Rental cars with real high mileage

So has anyone ever rented a car and gotten one with a ton of miles on it? Or do most of the companies keep cars with low miles on them? I am worried that when we rent one for our next trip, next year we might get a vehicle with real high mileage on it and I don't want the chances of it breaking down on the road or anything.

We tried a "rent a wreck" once, when we flew into a small airport and hadn't arranged for a rental in advance, and no newer cars were available. Fortunately the car worked just fine. The only problem we've had with a rental -- with low mileage -- was when a battery died. The rental company took care of it for us. Problems happen, even on vacation. We just deal with it and move on.

FWIW most rentals have fewer than 30,000 miles on them. We rented a car in Hawaii that had fewer than 20 miles on it. Kinda fun being the first people to rent it.

It depends. If you rent from one of the super discount companies, such as Fox, you will get a higher mileage car.

This really isn't an issue. A car with 30,000 miles on the odometer doesn't mean it will break down!

This! Most rental cars are low mileage because the companies like to sell them before they reach higher mileage - much easier to sell, plus they keep a turnover and don't have to worry as much about costly maintenance.

Just look at the odometer before selecting the car. Most rental companies allow you to pick your own car.

Agree with North of Mouse. Normally rental cars/fleet cars are sold way before having high mileage.

We were assigned a Ford Edge from Budget in December 2012 with more than 50,000 miles on it. Worst rental experience ever.

Ok, so I would need to look for one that has no more than 30-40,000 miles on it. I'll take note.

I mean, the rental car company is going to handle all break downs. Where are you driving? Unless you're driving through the dessert or something, while inconvenient, they'll take care of you.

I don't understand why anyone would be concerned about breaking downlllll

Have you considered not renting a car? If you are concerned about breakdowns maybe renting a car is not for you.
