Rent/Trade Board is dry as a desert

It seems like no one is posting points for rent. Most of the more recent posts are for transfers. I've been monitoring the Rent/Trade board recently because I'm looking for a May reservation.

Any other renters out there notice this?

I think it's because of the new posting requirements/restrictions that have been put in place on the board.
I'm thinking that "business" has gone elsewhere

Would you mind elaborating further? I really only check out the Rent/Trade board when I need a reservation.

Those wishing to rent or trade must now have had their user name on the DIS for a minimum of 6 months.
Also they must have a minimum of 50 posts evenly spaced on forums other than the rent/trade forum during the past 6 months as well

DH had tried to contact a few people on the board to buy some points and NO ONE responded to his PMs. So, he ended up going to the site that sponsors that thread (David's Vacation Club Rentals). We were contacted immediately and they found a seller with a great price at our desired resort. :thumbsup2 If you are looking to rent points, I'd try David's Vacation Club Rentals link HERE. Maybe, people are leary of handing over money without a safety net of a company behind the transaction. I'd buy/sell something on ebay before craigslist any day of the week. JMO :wizard:

Another great thng about Davids is that if you sign up for his e-mails you often get his "Last Minute specials"

I found the same thing when I was looking for points to rent for my brother.

I'm glad that those new rules are there.
Even when it means that people go elsewhere because when they leave for something like this i doubt their honesty.....

I don't know if the new rules are the reason but i think it also has to do with how things are right now.
The economy is getting a bit better so people start going on vacations again and they are going to use their own points.

Thanks for everyone's responses. I don't frequent the boards enough to follow rules changes so I'm assuming they are for the best. It just stinks because I've rented 3-4 times over the past couple of years and never had a problem. I always felt I could tell who was legit by my communication with the renter. Oh well...

The bad thing about David's is he doesn't do reservations for one night, I am renting points right now for a trip in May I was going to check out on May 12th then the scavenger hunt was for May 12th and 13th there was no way I was going to leave then. So now I need to get a room for one night I can pay $136 for all stars or like $160 for dvc that sounds like a no brainer to me.

My advice to you would be to get your post total up and then make a request "points wanted" on the rent board and you will have plenty of callers.

The reason it's dry is absolutely because of the new rules. Even though the new 50 post rule was made public 6 months before it took effect, most of the people looking to rent out their points were caught off guard because they didn't check the forums enough to know about the rule change.

I myself have rented out my points on a number of occasions, and even though I knew about the rule change, I've found it difficult to keep up a running 50 post total because I have trouble finding the time to post regularly.

I hope the new rules don't destroy the rental board as we know it. What is a shame (to member's of this board looking to rent other people's points) is that it's made it much more expensive, by virtue of Supply and Demand. Before the rules went into effect, the average going rate was about $10/pt. Now if you're lucky enough to be able to get points, you'll be paying at least $12. If you go through David as stated above, you'll be paying $13, since all the Supply has been effectively locked out.

Hi, Is there a way to check the 6 months,50 post rule?? Or will you just be denied posting when you try?? I have not heard this new rule and I have some points (close to expiring) I may not be able to use. Thanks, Joan

Just a warning to those trying to up their numbers, posts complaining/discussing the new rules don't count either as I understand it; nor to posts with just smilies and short replies like "I agree" etc... posts need to be substantial and offer something to the boards in terms of information/discussion.

I tried to post points for rent on the rent/trade bored last week but got denied because although i have been a member of the boards for over 2 years i dont have time to post regulary so in the last 6 months haven't had anywhere near 50 posts.

i am not moaning though as i do think it is a good rule (i just wasnt aware of it until recently) It will certainly stop unscrupulous people trying to take advantage of the boards. We have never had spare points before either so this is the first time we have looked to rent them.

We have now put our points up for rent via David's DVC rentals (as yet not managed to rent them though) although he has contacted us twice but we were too slow in replying to him as other renters beat us to the reply. He basically sends out to a number of renters saying he has someone interested in making a booking and it is first to reply to him that gets to rent the points.

So in short i think the new rules will dry up the rent/trade board for some time as i agree some were caught off gaurd, but in the long run it should make it much safer for someone renting points via that forum.

I could be totally mistaken, but did I read somewhere that there was some type of a surcharge if you paid via credit card for points rented though David? Something about his business being based in Canada and if you were from the states and using a credit card......anyway I could have to different things just jumbled up so please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm really thinking about renting some points for our next trip. Thanks.

You can no longer post a 'points wanted' thread either. I've rented points 3 or 4 times and I had posted 'points wanted' threads but last year I noticed that had changed. I had to reply to someone that posted a points for rent thread. It made it a little harder because you have to catch it just right and be one of the 1st to reply to it.

I was looking to start my search for this year and I also noticed that the rent/trade board was dry. It only has 1 page and most threads are closed.

This is exactly what happened to me.....

I came out to the Rent/Trade board looking for a point transfer...
I was checking on the proper text to use.. and found the information about 50 posts in 6 months. Now, I haven't been on the boards much lately.. but even when I did, 50 posts in 6 months is a heck of a lot of posts for quiet little me. I found myself very stressed.. and disappointed. I'm sure the rule has validity.. but having been a member for so long.. I was pretty bummed that my "longevity" didn't pull more weight. :confused3

I was lucky to catch someone posting points for transfer.. but they were only half of what I really need. Now, I'll have to wait for next year and try to recover more points then.

bummer.....

I've rented WDW Villas twice via Disboards/point rental - and haven't had a single problem. On the contrary - the 2 wonderful people I've rented from have gone out of their way to help me - especially this year. I had to change my dates, and the person I rented from went above and beyond to help me thru the process.
Sorry it's come to this....
