We are looking to acquire a small amout of pts to finish a ressie. Is one way better than the other..to rent or transfer?

I posted a similar ? on the rent/trade board but it was moved over here but the poster said it can be complicated to transfer if it's not the right resort/use yr. Can someone help explain this. We need less than 1 nights pts so it seems renting (where they make the ressie in our name) would not work.

We were looking for VWL in Feb so we are less than 7 months out so it seems I could get a transfer from any DVC resort as long as they don't exp before 2/05. Am I missing anything? Just trying to clarify. Thanks for any help!!!

you can just rent 1 point by someone transfering this to your account.

if you want to rent - then you need to get one night points (not just one point).

If you situation I would go borrow one point from next year.

if you can't do this - send me an email and I will try to help you.

Thanks Pat. It's not 1 point, it's 22 actually and we have borrowed all from the next year to take friends :D.

I plan on posting my request to transfer 22 pts to my acct but I just wanted to know if their are any loopholes I need to be aware of since the one poster to my other message said .....it's better to rent (have the owning party make the ressie in your name) than to transfer becasue there can be complications if not the same resort or year. Just wondering what those complications were. If I HAD to rent (them make the ressie) I would have to rent 26 pts (to get 2 whole nights/studio)

I think I'm ok with being under 7 months and could rent from any resort owner at this pt (not just VWL) and not expiring until 3/05. Thanks for you help. I don't want to miss anything..theres' so many rules and regs!!!

I think you are OK, too. Most members seem to actually accomplish the transfer with a 3-way call to MS. If you want to be really sure, just ask the MS CM right before the transfer - tell the CM you want to use the points to complete a reservation at xx resort on xx date. Be sure to say that you will be combining the transferred points with your existing points.

If it were me, I'd have the same CM actually make my reservation as soon as the transfer was done. ThenI'd be all set.

Best wishes -

<font face="times" size="+0">DisFam95, for a list of transfer rules, you can reference the link in my sig. Sorry, the list is kind of scary and long, so you should ask us any questions you have about it.

There can be issues w/ getting full use out of transferred points, but IMO that is still the best way to go since you'll be in full control of the points for your ressie.

one of the problems with transferring is that you can only do it once a year to both accounts.

so to transfer points to your account means that the member can't transfer to anyone else for a year.

Berry and Carol....

Thanks..wow that was a long list but I think I got it!!! Hope so anyway?!?!

Actually that's not true anymore. It's unlmited in ONE direction, either in or out but not both and it's per use year, not calendar year. Here are the options as you suggest, rent one nights accomodations and link it to your other reservaiton or rent and have the points transferred.

The issues are these. If you rent the night but don't have the points youself, there is always a risk the seller could cancel your reservtion. But you can minimize this risk and usually not pay anything until you see the reservation in your name. If you rent the points and have them transferred, most people require full payment up front. But if you can find better terms, this may work just as well or better.

Here's the rub with tranferred points. The points are supposed to retain their original use year and home resort so in theory, what you own and your use years shouldn't matter. BUT, and a big one, is that the DVC computers aren't set up to track this. So you then transfer the points into ONE of your use years. If they put them in the wrong use year they won't be accessible for your trip. Plus they actually (currently) assume your home resort for the contract they are transferred to. I think they also assume the new use year expiration but am not certain. Yes, I know that's not what the rules say.

This brings up some potential problems which I've alluded to above. It also sets up the possibility of some hanky panky if someone were willing to exploit this current limitation.
