Rent or Transfer - which is better?

I have 247 points for VWL that expire Nov. 2006.

Is it easier to transfer those points to another DVC member or rent them to non DVC?

I sold some points last year and didn't have any problems - just need to hassle with calling member services.

I'm thinking there may be DVCs out there that would like to get some VWL points for Christmas ressies.

I've never transfered to another member, but would think it would be easier as then you are not the one making the room reservation or worrying about the payments and such.

Would like to hear others opinions though.

I agree with Diana - transferring is easier.

You will be dealing with another member, so theoretically, both parties understand how DVC works. To transfer points, you negotiate and agree on the terms and then make a 3-way call to MS. Next collect your $$ (or the rest of your $$, according to your agreement). You're done!

No reservations to make, no worries about availability & waitlists, no confirmations to send, no detailed cancellation policy to explain, no "jitters" to calm, no late payments or payment failuresto worry about (which always seem to come after your banking deadlines hve passed), no worries about hurricanes or other unforeseen uncontrollable events that will make your renter want to back out and think you are horrid if you don't let them.

Transferring is a final transaction. Once done, it's done. IMHO, renting a reservation keeps you "on the hook" until the renter's stay is complete.

The only thing you have to worry about with transferring is that the other party will follow through on whatever payment arrangments the two of you agreed on. But that's a worry/risk with any rental transaction.

Best wishes -

Do you usually get all the money up front before doing the transfer? If you don't you have no recourse to get your money if you have already transfered over the points. At least with rental you can cancel the ressie if you didn't receive final payment.

What have others done?

If one does a transfer as the OP mentioned, would the member who receives the points still have access to the 11 month booking window for the original member's home resort?

Sorry for turning this into a "trade" discussion, but I'm looking for a week before Christmas at VWL. But I want to trade my BCV points for it. Any interest? You can PM me if you prefer to avoid discussing this on the wrong board.

I think we would prefer to sell them. We won't be able to get to WDW again until 2007 (boy that's depressing) and would like to use the money to help pay for our 2006 cruise.

I did this once and waited until I had the money in hand before the transfer. Just make sure you give the person you are transferring to all your information. Phone number, address and email. Try and do all the things email or mail so both parties have something in writing. It is a very easy phone call to Disney. Plus they will ask you to send a fax so they can put the information in your file. It is a better way to go if you ask me. I have done a few transfers with friends and family to make reserving rooms easier.

The one time I asked MS about a transfer, they said they would have to do a three way call to have both members on the phone to authorize the transfer.

What happen with the use year after points are transfered? What use year apply, the buyer or the seller uy?

In theory the points retain the exact same deminsion they had from the original owner. Some will tell you that many times the points actually switch over to the use year of the recepient.

Having just participated in a transfer today - that went VERY easily, I must say - the points were transferred into MY current use year, not the use year of the original owner. Also, MS did not require a 3-way call for this transaction - I simply gave the other person my name, address, and account number and it was all done! I did call MS to confirm the transaction, but it went very smoothly and MS was very helpful. BTW, I was also able to bank the transferred points; I have a June U.Y. and need to use them in June 2005. No problem!

Can points that have already been banked be transferred to another member? I'm looking to buy pts for an upcoming trip and would like to have the pts transferred to my best friend's DVC account (I'm not a member - YET :) ) and have her make my ressie. Can this be done if the sellers pts are banked? Thanks!

A 3-way call is not the only way to perform a transfer. It is also acceptable for the transferor alone to contact MS to initiate the transfer. The transferor would just need to provide MS with the Full Name, Address, Phone# of the recipient, and when the recipient plans to use those transferred points (sometimes it's also useful to know the description of the contract that the recipient wants the points put into, i.e. a BCV Aug UY 200pt contract). Keep in mind, although MS may tell you it's easier to do this if the transferor also provides the recipient's Membership#, the Membership# is NOT necessary. (For security reasons, some DVC Members are wary of giving out their Membership# to other people.) When the transferor contacts MS, they can start the process by telephone first, but MS usually likes to receive something in writing (either Fax or E-mail) to reconfirm the transfer details.

For more on this topic, take a look at the link in my sig. I will copy/paste the relevant paragraph here in a moment.

If the Transferrer and Recipient do not have matching Use Years, then the Recipient will not have a full year (12mos) of use out of the Transferred Points. This is because when the Transfer is performed, MS will ask the Recipient to choose which Use Year they want the points Transferred into. Example: Transferrer has a Sep UY, Recipient has a Apr UY. If the transfer is done today Jan04, and the Transferror wants to Transfer out Sep03 points, then the Recipient has a choice to receive points into their Apr03 UY (making the points only valid from 9/1/03 to 3/31/04) OR their Apr04 UY (making the points only valid from 4/1/04 to 8/31/04).

It's unclear what happens when you bank those transferred points though. I think people have reported conflicting info about that. I'll report back on that next year, as I happened to receive some transferred points this year that I will probably bank later.

Banked points CANNOT be transferred, but transferred points can be banked.

I just transferred BWV points to an OKW owner, and he had a REALLY hard time getting MS to keep the points as BWV points. Once they were in his account, they just showed up as more OKW points. He said it took SEVERAL calls to MS to try and book at the 11 month window.

It seems as though (right now, anyway)...DVC's default is for them to become the resort of the person receiving the points.

We did have different UY's, and the points did keep my UY (something he REALLY wanted as well).

Can anyone help clarify this situation for me regarding renting or transferring ? I was considering transferring points from another member to cover my DDs room in May 2005. My use year is June (all of my '04-'05 and '05-'06 pts are already spoken for). So if I transferred points into my account for that reservation, the use year would become June (mine) and if she had to cancel for any reason it would be too late to bank the points and they would have to be used by the end of June - right??

Seems I'd be better off to rent the points for her from someone with a use year further out in case an emergency cancels her trip. Thanks to anyone who can confirm or help me understand this ! :smooth:

Actually, the UY stays the same as the person you rent from. So, that is not a problem
