Rent DVC or not?

Hi there,

I have a big decision to make! We are planning a trip in (dates) and need to choose...

Because we are in the UK and the deals are different here, for various reasons the 2 options below come out around the same price. But I have never rented DVC points before, don't know much about it and that's why I'm looking for help.

We are choosing between: booking through Disney, at OKW Studio, 14 nights, 14 day park hopper tkts and free dining
or
Rent DVC points for (resort and villa size) paying for dining and 10 day MYW tickets.

What are the pros and cons of renting DVC points? I know you don't get free dining (hence adding it into the quote) and you don't get mouse keeping. Is there anything else?

My partner is very worried about the risk of renting points, but I saw the dvcrequest link on here - has anyone worked with that company to secure a ressie? We would never be able to afford 2 weeks at (resort) this year unless we go DVC.

I would love to stay at (resort), partner doesn't mind either way, so please just clue us in about the pros and cons of renting DVC points. Thanks!

Probably the biggest consideration for you is cancellation. DVC has very different cancellation policies than CRO does. Owners are restricted further by having their points expire. Its best to think of renting DVC points as non-cancellable, at least start from that assumption.

We are long time renters and have never had a problem. Every dvc owner we've worked with have been prompt, very easy to work with and put in our requests and stayed in touch with us right up until we leave for WDW. Would much rather work with a dvc owner directly and not someone who rents out points for the owner.

How many people in your party? If it's only 2, then maybe those studio options will work, but for 2 weeks, I could NEVER stay in a studio. It would be a 1 bedroom at OKW for me.

Resort and villa size) may already be taken and you run the risk of getting a Member who doesn't know what they are doing.

It also depends on you and your partner and how upset you would be if you ran into problems renting. If you want a sure thing, get you room from Disney, if you want the cheapest deal, rent from a Member.

Your two choices don't make much sense - do you or don't you really want the dining plan and what size room do you really want?

There is NO way I'd pay the prices Disney wants for DVC reservations (even with free dining) - I'd rent points from a member. It's scary to make those arrangements the first time - but if you read the boards and all the tips for the renter and rentee - you can learn what you need to know to do it.

Since it sounds from your post that the price is very similiar, I think going with Disney will give you the best in terms of flexibility if you had to cancel.

With Disney, you pay the $200 deposit and pay the rest by 45 days prior. With a rental, the payment terms and cancellation terms will be up to the owner you choose to rent the reservation from. In many cases, owners require payment in full much before that, and have very strict rules if you want to cancel.

Good luck!

When you want to rent points from someone on the rent boards,
I would do a search on their dvc username in that forum and check out their history on renting points. That should give you an idea on what to expect
from the renter.

Only you can determine the value. I don't ever see a good value in the free dining, but coming from the UK, I know you have options and packages that those of us in the States don't have.

I would say Rent if you can. It is nice to be a "temporary member" of the DVC because you can take advantage of the member perks like discounts on dinning and shopping because they typically ask for just your room key. As far as tickets, at a 14 day trip, you might want to consider an Annual Pass. It pays for itself in 10 days.

Just so you know, there have been reports that more places are asking for the DVC member card as not all KTTW cards are still saying DVC. Renters may or may not get discounts they have in the past due to this change.
