Rent a car and have to drive in LA or take shuttles. cost? DL, Knotts, universal?

Their is 3 in my family going. Would it be cheaper to rent a car? Never done it before. And a little nervous having to drive in LA I need transportation from LAX to Disneyland and back later to LAX. Transportation to Universal Studios and back to Disneyland. Transportation to Knotts Berry Farm and back to Disneyland. Thanks jill

If you are nervous about driving in LA, I would not rent a car. Our freeways are awful, our signage is terrible and drivers are rude and fast. I live here and I'm amazed how tourists can do it. There must be a shuttle from LAX to Disneyland. And since the other places are all big tourist attractions, there will be some way to get there too. Ask your hotel if they know of a van service. One of our vacations we drove in Holland got had a small accident. Even though we had bought insurance the car rental place wanted an additional $500, which my spouse paid. I was grateful we didn't kill anybody considering how difficult it was at times.

My point being that it isn't worth it sometimes to go the "cheaper" way - that it may not be cheap in the long run. Oh, and our gas now is outrageous - over $3 a gallon. They charge us more than other states because they can get away with it.

We just got back and we had rented a car. We drove from the airport to Disney to Magic Mountain to Santa Monica to Huntington Beach and back to the airport (in 10 days). Highway 5 is a pig. Highway 405 was usually pretty good. We found the lanes to be narrower than what we are used to up here in Toronto but overall, we didn't have a problem other than congestion. The car pool lane helped a lot. We also had GPS.
