If I need to remove two days from the end of a reservation, do I have to cancel and re-book the whole reservation?

If someone is on the wait list, for the same room/dates, that I want to keep, and I cancel my reservation, will the room will go to the person on the wait list, not to my new reservation?
My guess is that it will.

OR,
Do they allow one to modify a reservation, by removing days?

If you remove nights from either the start or end of the reservation, they do not have to cancel and rebook. They would just change either the check in date or the number of nights.

Thank you! I am thinking about adding an extra day for our Christmas trip so I better make up my soon!

The only time it gets tricky is when you want to change something in the middle of the reservation.

I guess I don't get it...you can add or deduct "nights" from a reservation, but you cannot add or deduct "rooms" from a reservation.

If you have a reservation for a 2 bdrm, but want to change it to a studio or 1 bdrm, you must cancel the reservation and try to rebook....not always easy or possible during vacation weeks.

You are booking a different room. Thus, you are not modifiying the days (adding, subtracting a day), you are changing the location. So you cancel and rebook.

It's different room inventory. If you have a 2BR booked and decide you only need a 1BR, MS will not break your lockoff up into a 1BR and studio. This would be unfair to people on the waiting list for a 2BR. There are only so many of the lockoffs allocated as 2BRs and if people could book them and then later split them up, it would reduce the number of 2BRs available for those dates. Worst case scenario, everybody who booked a 2BR decides to downsize and that would leave no 2BRs at all. Anyone on the waiting list for a 2BR would be completely shut out.

So what happens to the points? DO they go into "holding" and what does that mean??

If you cancel all or part of your trip at least 31 days prior to check in, the points go back into your account with no restrictions. You can use them for something else or bank them if they are current points and you are still within your banking window.

If you cancel from 30 days to 1 day prior to check in, the points go into "holding" and can only be used to book something 60 days in advance. Holding points cannot be banked so you would need to use them or lose them before the end of your Use Year.

If you cancel on your check in day, all points are forfeited.

Yes, very quick and painless (assuming that one day is available). -- Suzanne

Thank you! I added an extra night at the beginning of our Christmas 2009 trip -- getting a little worried about crowds and being able to do what we really want with five people . . . :scared1:

It is a little schizophrenic and inconsistent to allow one to change the days but not split a lockoff when you have a lockoff reserved. I believe you'll see the ability to drop days without a cancelation and rebooking but not the ability to add since you could make them separate reservations and link them anyway. Now if they were to institute a minimum stay at some points, this too could change. Marriott will allow you to split a lockoff after the fact but they do charge a fee for the split (before or later) and few people would be reserving just the one side of a lockoff at any given resort.
