Oboe reeds:
My son has been playing oboe for 6 years. If you are a strong oboe student, you can/should make them yourselves. However, my son isn't that great at making the reeds so we do still purchase them. Supplies to make your own reeds are pretty costly as well.
We buy Marlin Lesher brand reeds from wwbw.com. The price is reasonable and shipping is quick. He uses med. hard/hard but IIRC soft should be used for beginners.
Oboe reeds are much more expensive than clarinet reeds. A clarinet reed box was about $4/5 (when my daughter played a few years ago). However, oboe reeds are about $8 - $25 EACH.
Remember oboe reeds are fragile, so if they crack they are unusable. If you take private oboe lessons, the instructor can make them and you can buy from them.
My son doesn't like Emerald or Jones brand reeds. He likes Marlin Lesher and Fox. (usually Marlin he likes better). There are others W something (Washington, Worthington--maybe) that he said were crap..
