It is now T-30 days and counting for the trip of a lifetime involving Rednecks, White Socks and Blue Ribbon Beer…with Photo’s to prove it!

Over the last 10 months I learned A LOT from these DIS Boards and I just want to share some of the funny stuff that has happened along the way and that knowing our luck…will happen on this trip. I believe a picture is worth a thousand words so there will be more pictures than words. I’m not a foodie, so my food reviews will be simple…liked it, was everyday…ish or WOW, you gotta have it.

I chose this title ‘cause as a kid we went to Bluegrass Festivals…ya know folk singers starting to sing at 6 in the mornin and going till way after midnight and I remember a group in Summerville, PA singing this song…AND IT’S BEEN STUCK IN MY HEAD EVER SINCE! And really, we are just a bunch of country folks, we don’t mean no harm…Pappy really will wear white socks with sandals and the Blue Ribbon Beer….we’ll will let that one alone!

Hope you enjoy….

One last thing, if your like my niece who majored in English, great…but you’ll notice my grammar is just how I talk…I say youn’s and we went swimming in the crik (ok Mom, creek) . My spellin ain’t great, but all you smart people can figure it out.

So how did this basic everyday trip to Disney come to be? And how many times was it modified and turn into the trip of a lifetime?

Well, actually it’s pretty simple! I went on a business trip to Dallas in October, 2007. When I came back, the kids and DBF met me at the airport. I knew they were meeting me at the airport, but exactly where I wasn’t sure. I bought a new cowboy hat in Texas so I was adjusting it as I was walking towards the luggage pick-up. I heard kids talking but didn’t see them sooooo I ended up walkin right past them as the kids came running towards me. When I finally realized what had happened, the kids were already yelling at me, “Miss Wendi where are you going?” Without thinking, I gave the single, 40 year old female thing with no kids response and yelled back, “to Disney, where else.” Dumb hick statement #1 Wendi…and that was it that was the start of trip.

We grabbed my luggage and went off to eat at Friendly’s Family Restaurant and the kids started. When are we going? Huh? Yeah? Where? Disney! DBF chimes in? Yeah when? I don’t know, next year! Dumb statement # 2. Yet again, Wendi (you’ll soon realize at times I just forget to put the brain in gear) makes a DUMB hick statement just to change the conversation!

And everyday ever since, that was it, two kids hammered me until finally at Christmas we (DBF and I) gave in and set the date! September, 2008. We would go on a Monday and return on a Friday. Wait modify that, again, again, again, again, again-that’s it, I’m buying the plane tickets, one last change again and yes…the trip is finally planned 10 days in Orlando with 8 in the World! September 12-21st, 2008. Watch out world----here come the Sheckler’s! :scared1:

There will be 6 of us making the trek to Orlando:

Mimi aka Beth aka the grandmother: old enough to know better but young enough to still have fun…as long as it doesn’t include rides of any sort or type! Does not do rides-repeat does not do rides---okay got it Mimi. Worried Disney only has rides and she’ll get bored…made her the official lookout for Hidden Mickey’s...and the Sheckler Family Pin Trader. Drinks only bottled water and orange juice. Likes to eat but don’t give her someone else’s order…warning to servers!

Mimi's Big Cahuna picture forthcoming, but until then we give you Mimi doing the grandmotherly thing...spoiling Erika & Austin

Pappy aka Aaron aka grandfather: unlike Mimi, is old enough to know better, but doesn’t care! You only live once and may as well live life to the fullest! Yes, he will wear white socks with his sandals. Will talk to anyone at anytime about anything! Instilled a hard work ethic in all three of their kids and he himself still works a couple days a week…even though he is well past the retirement age. Eats a lot of chicken and even occasionally watches what else he eats! He is diabetic so Mimi gently reminds him of this from time to time (pretty much every day, every meal!). For more about Pappy, refer to his son, Glenn’s description…like father, like son!

Glenn aka DBF aka “boytoy”-39-single Dad to 2 great kids. Describes himself as strong as an ox and stupid as one too! Hard worker-has held the same job for 20 years AND has his own business that keeps him going about 25 hours a day. In his spare time, if there is any likes fishing, hunting, boating, riding his ATV…pretty much anything outdoors…as long as it isn’t hot (has to be continually reminded Orlando is hot-may be even 90 while we are there!). Lives on Monster energy drinks and a good steak dinner. Miss Wendi and Glenn will be celebrating their 1 year Anniversary at Le Cellar.

Erika aka DD 11-aagghhh becoming a ‘tween! Has definite likes and dislikes: Likes to get A’s in school and gets irritated when she get’s a B. Likes Pooh, not the Princesses. Likes Hannah Montana totally not into High School Musical. Likes kiddie and spinning rides but hates coasters. And loves fishing! Has her own lures and tackle box and will tell you exactly what to use to catch what type of fish! But hates it when the water turns her blonde hair green! Is the pickiest eater I have ever seen and prefers to make or cook her own food. Will order a Big Mac without special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions, on a plain bun-2 not 3 please-so let me get this straight kid you want a hamburger? No a Big Mac made my way! Yeah, the tween years will be a real experience!

Austin aka DS8-though celebrating #8 while we are there at Chef Mickey’s (officially turns the big 8 the week after we return). Totally into Goofy and Pluto! Has the biggest brown eyes just when you mention them to him. Maintaining the official countdown calendar and knows the total itinerary by heart! Totally psyched for the trip. Loves every ride, the bigger, the wetter, the better! Is in a major growth spurt right now and is seeming to eat his Dad out of house and home! No really, ate 2 corn dogs, french fries, a whole big pickle, 3 ribs of celery with peanut butter, an orange, chips and cheese puffs, a bottle of water and sugar cookie for dessert for LUNCH and 15 minutes later asked what he could have for a snack---he was still hungry? Seriously, there’s not much he won’t eat!

Me- 40 aka the GF aka “the old lady”, the “no Disney really doesn’t do anything for me-to okay I may have a little obsession problem with Disney” Tends to open her mouth without thinking---has a major case of dumb statement syndrome aka likes to put foot into mouth! Likes to ride most rides but as I have gotten older realize some don’t bode too well with my stomach (spinning rides are now out!) Likes to eat, especially foods I can’t prepare or don’t make everyday. Was raised on meat and potatoes and of course where’s my chocolate and dessert? Likes camping, hiking and fishing as long as Glenn put’s on my worms! The Chief Planner for the trip with input..hahumm “input people” from everyone!

:cool2:

So we decided to go to Disney. We thought it would be just another vacation…pack your bags, head to your destination, get in a long line and buy your amusement park tickets and have fun. We thought a day in each park would be more than enough for us. :rotfl2:

When we started telling this our friends and family….we got a check-up from the neck up---you know when ya gotta use your two ears and one mouth in that order….. My Administrative Asst. at work, Debbie, told me about her Disney timeshare and a Sales Manager, Vito, told me how he and his family go every September and get “Free Dining” and they both told me about rides and shows we HAD to do or we’d be missin the best part of Disney. Friends Donny and Eileen suggested we may want to plan things out or before you know it we’ll be spending thousands of dollars---huh? we ain’t rich! A client, Lynnae told me she was getting married at Disney (I thought that would be unique! She enlightened me and told me 1500 other brides a year get married there---huh?) and planning a Disney vacation was key. She suggested dealing directly with Disney to get the best pricing and said that the majority of people are over the top nice. Seemed everyone we talked to had already been there, done that a couple times over and shared their two cents worth!

Ummm, this trip was starting to sound expensive….so I decided to Google to see if I could save any money. ‘Cheap Disney Vacations”. Up popped “The Ultimate Disney World Savings Guide 2008 by Beth Haworth a former Disney employee. Sounded good for $20 so I bought it, downloaded it and it has since become an invaluable tool! :worship: I also bought a “Passporter” “Birnbaums”…the version for Adults and the one for Kids, a “Hidden Mickey’s” Guide and a “Fodor’s Guide” (early signs of Disney OCD were starting to show in me….though at that time I had no idea what Disney Obsessive Compulsive Disorder was :rotfl: )

We soon realized we would have to plan this trip out. I panic’d BIG TIME!!! There were acronyms all over the place I just didn’t get! I thought MNSSHP was a midshipman or something and ADR meant average daily rate or had something to with financial stuff. The “what if’s” scenarios came into my mind. What if it rains the whole time—then what would we do? What if all the rides were kiddie rides-would the kids think Disney was dumb?

I kept Googling and came across the DIS Boards. Wow…other people who had the same questions we had. And there’s other things to do in Orlando! Yayyyy, there is life outside of the mouse! This was good because Glenn and I both agreed we were doing this for the kids…we really weren’t Disney kinda of people…yeah right…we both soon became obsessed with the Mouse! AND making this trip unforgettable, a trip we would talk about for the rest of our lives! :cool1:

So the planning began….

Hey! Giving you a shout-out! I love to see another Disney OCD convert! I'm so glad that you found the boards to help you. A Disney vacation definitely needs to be planned!

Hey! Giving you a shout-out! I love to see another Disney OCD convert! I'm so glad that you found the boards to help you. A Disney vacation definitely needs to be planned!

Yeah over the last 10 months I have realized this...and that this really isn't going to be a "relaxing" vacation either. Someone told me, it's more like "sensory overload" everyday, everywhere you go...even if you aren't planning to be a Disney Park Commando!

Soooooo once we come back, we'll just have to plan a relaxing one just for DBF and me!

So we've never been to Disney and we start the planning process and my Admin Asst. says to me one day about her “DVC” aka Disney Timeshare. To be honest, I wasn’t at all interested. I mean going the same place every year, the same week, plus they were always sooooooo expensive! Didn’t do anything for me. I prefer to travel to different locations and rarely do I ever go the same week when I actually do get a vacation…which being in management…isn’t very often anymore! But she said, it wasn’t your “traditional” type of timeshare. Okay that still conjured up a lot of money in my head. She said Disney had the best type of timeshare out there, you buy x amount of points and can use those points to pay for your rooms at any number of over 500 locations around the world, at anytime. She said you’d basically pay this year for your next 30-50 years of vacations (ouch that sounds expensive!) But she said in the end, you’d probably end up spending a lot more money because you’d be paying for your rooms in 2008 for those you’d still be taking when I was 70! Now that, I got. Inflation, yep got it. Pay the price now, you know the cost of rooms/villas and everything else is going up…why not pay now, so you play later. Yeah, I got it, it made sense. And since I wasn’t locked into going the same place, year after year, I really liked the idea.

I talked it over with DBF that night in January and he got it too…it made perfect sense...even though we aren't Disney people! we could go alot of places here in the states, that we have always wanted to go!

We decided in late January, we wanted Villas at Wilderness Lodge as our home resort, so we would need to buy a resale. After some homework, The Timeshare Store seemed reputable organization to deal with (Jason is who actually seen us thru the whole process—and we couldn’t have been more pleased with him-great asset to the Timeshare Store!). Within a week, he had located a great deal for us. April UY, 200 points coming 4/1/08 and 200 banked from 2007 at $82 a point. We made an offer. It was accepted. Paperwork and down money sent. Passed thru ROFR and about 2-3 weeks. After some final paperwork etc…we closed a month after that. Yippeee!!!!

Finally, something about Disney that made good dollars and sense to me. We were going to save money on our future family vacations.

We knew being within 6 months of departing, that we would probably have to settle for something other than VWL, but we didn’t care. We had heard so many wonderful things about DVC from both here on the boards and other people. A week after we closed, we called DVC and made our first reservation for this September---VWL 2BR and Studio---nope, not available, OKW-3BR Villa---nope not available, OKW 2BR + Studio---yes, it was available! Yiiiiipppppppeeeeee! We were all set.

But what about my Budget for this year---well, I would be saving money, because I didn’t have to pay for rooms but, between the down money, closing costs etc…my bank account yelled, OUCH! And we don’t even get to stay where we really wanted to, VWL!

Oh well, we won’t be in the rooms much anyway and in the long run, this is a HUGE money saver! Just not this year!

I posted the following nearing the close of our Timeshare deal. http://www.disboards.com/showpost.php?p=24401639&postcount=1

Wow. When you go Disney OCD you really mean it! That is amazing. A DVC member. Congratulations! And you still haven't been to Disney yet, right? You are going to have a really good time!

Nope, never been there. But have come to realize over the past 10 months, Disney really does offer something for everyone...thus DBF and I have slowly become "Disney people"

Although this trip has become over the top in many ways, from the Budget being blown away to making matching t-shirts and that Autograph book...that just cost waaaayyyyy too much!

Oh well, I guess its gonna be the trip of a lifetime! And then the next trips can be "more normal" if there is such a thing! That is if we survive this one!

Haha. You'll make it. It will be awesome. I'm not sure about crowd levels in September since we have gone during Spring Break in the past and it was CRAZY! Do you have a touring plan for each park just in case it's crowded?

OMG---I’m going to an “Amusement Park” and I gotta make reservations…to eat? You’re kidding me right? No and you better plan where you are going to eat soon, you gotta be on the phone first thing in the morning at the 180 day mark or you won’t get where you want to eat at. Yeah right! No I’m serious. Huh, really? Holy s—t! Disney’s gotten way to fancy for us!!!

That was my conversation around Valentine’s Day this year between my Admin Asst, Sales Manager and myself. They told me the restaurants can fill up very quickly once they offer “Free Dining” At first, I didn’t believe them, I expected your typical Amusement Park food, you know heartburn and indigestion all week, then come back and diet like crazy to rid yourself of all the fried foods! I didn’t realize how the food options have changed in Amusement Parks! None of us did!

We considered doing the basic dining plan, doing the deluxe dining plan and then staying off the plan altogether. Yeah we were a bit backwards but eventually realized, we should probably pick where to eat at first, then apply those same options to things off the menu that might be what we would actually eat. So this is what we picked:

Hoop de Doo Review-Category 1 seating
Chef Mickeys- Dinner
Mama Melrose’s with Fantasmic Dinner Package
Crystal Palace-Lunch
Le Cellar-Glenn and Wendi--- 1 year Anniversary
Artist Point-Pappy and Mimi---Grandparents night out
Whispering Canyon Café-Lunch
Polynesian Review-Category 2 seating
Prime Time Café (Mimi and Pappy paying for their own-will be out of credits)

We figured, the counter service options we’d wing it depending upon where we are in the park and the same with the snack options. We’ve done our homework on what’s available but who knows what will actually pick. Knowing all of our diets will probably be sku’d while we are in the Orlando, we decided to leave some options open---so we ruled out the Deluxe Plan---just too much food. When we considered what we would actually eat off the menu’s vs. what the plan cost---we figured a savings of between 35 to 40%, then added onto our budget another $600 or so for out of pocket expenses. The out of pocket will probably be eaten up during the time we are away from the World which includes 2 travel days (1 to and 1 from), a day at Seaworld, a day at Discovery Cove and a day at Universal/Islands of Adventure and Hoop de Doo will be out of pocket as well.

So we found a web site that calculated our 180 day out mark and it was March 17, 2008. I took the day off work, as based off these boards and everyone else… I expected pure torture. I had my pen and paper handy, put all reservations in order of importance to us, had our estimated times we wanted the reservations for and credit card for any guarantees---Glenn was on the sidelines waiting to be called into action in case I got the CM from H—l with a back-up plan of reservations to be made…I was ready, bring on the torture! Started calling the dining line at 6:50AM, no response, 6:55AM, no response, redial, redial, redial, redial…I’m in, wahooo! I spoke with Zibi. Wow, phone conversation couldn’t have been better!!!!! With each reservation she would review the “rules” as it applied to that reservation---aka cancellation policies, dress codes, confirmation numbers etc..All reservations were made within about 20 minutes but we kinda got off track when we came to Mimi and Pappy’s night at Artist Point—when she said,” no bathing suits” I replied, “ok I’ll have Pappy leave the red bikini speedo back at OKW” the conversation went all downhill from there. I don’t remember the whole conversation but do remember there was a lot of hysterical laughing between both of us! All in all the reservation conversation lasted about 40 minutes. In addition I was pleasantly surprised when she was able to make some other reservations for Austin’s Albatross Cruise, the kids cooking class at GF and Erika’s “Hannah Montana” makeover at BBB. I was very pleased and excited this all went very well! The CM Zibi was awesome! :worship:

So we can cross this “To Do” off our list. I figure I’ll confirm everything in another week or so. We did make 2 minor changes since this call, and the person reconfirmed everything at that point, so I feel fairly comfortable everything is in order, as of right now…I am slightly concerned about Austin’s Birthday Cake at Chef Mickey’s as there seems to be quite a bit of confusion about cakes right now---but no trip is perfect! We’ll just have to go with it.

Haha. You'll make it. It will be awesome. I'm not sure about crowd levels in September since we have gone during Spring Break in the past and it was CRAZY! Do you have a touring plan for each park just in case it's crowded?

Yeah I made and typed up a Itinerary for each day and time we are in the parks for the rides, shows and attractions we'd like to see and do...but realistically expect only to be able to complete a tiny portion of each. They say September is very slow, thats why they offer the Free Dining..but who knows...it's Disney, on any given day it may be packed or totally empty (yeah, right:rotfl: )!

I put all our itineraries, confirmation numbers etc...in a two inch binder that total organization and is now FULL--I'll leave it back at OKW and just pull out the one page for each day, we have them laminated so they should be okay even if they get wet! OCD definately kicking in on the organization factor!

So we found the Orlando Convention and Visitors Bureau web-site and checked out other attractions. We were surprised how much else there was to do. We figured Orlando was just home to Disney and maybe some other smaller things that fed off of Disney’s fame. We soon realized how big some of the other attractions were and decided to check into cost and how close things were to Disney.

We decided to add:
-A day at Discovery Cove and swimming with the Dolphins-we planned this for Sunday-since they only allow 1000 reservations/people a day and Sundays are to be the busiest day at any park in Orlando. Then we’ll go back to OKW and go to Hoop de Doo Review.
-A day at Seaworld with the Polar Exploration Tour where you get to pet a penguin---I love the Clyde and Seamoor Sealion Show and all of their antics. And the kids will love being able to be up close and personal to the penguins. They just figured out last night Shamu was a killer whale! We fly in on Friday evening and will be staying off property and decided to go on Saturday before we check into OKW. Hopefully we will be able to eat at the Sharks Grille before we leave-the reviews for that place are all good and Austin will love being surrounded by Sharks.
-And a day at Universal and Islands of Adventure followed by dinner at one of the Citywalk restaurants---hopefully Jimmy Buffets Margaritaville or Bubba Gump Shrimp. I like the idea of all the theming both of those restaurants offer-Glenn just likes Margarita’s. We decided Monday would be the best day for this as it should be the slowest day of the week thus allowing us to ride more rides.
-Oh and Mimi was hoping to catch a live launch at Kennedy-but that got scraped early on, so now Pappy and Mimi are going to Kennedy on Wednesday and having Lunch with an Astronaut---which based off her reaction, I’m thinkin will be one of her trip highlights!

Overall cost wasn’t too bad. We booked the day at Discovery Cove back in January, so we were able to take advantage of the book early option and it came with up to 7 days admission to Seaworld. We got our US/IA and Kennedy tickets thru DWTickets-Insider, which had even better prices than AAA.

The trip is finally starting to take shape…especially considering “we’re really aren’t Mouse fanatics” Glenn keeps telling me, “yeah you go with that, slowly but surely you are earning your ears” He even bought me a pair of Mickey earrings with my Birthstone in it, just prove his point! All I got to say is “kewwwwwllllll!!!!”

Well, it started out innocently enough. The kids while attending, one of their Dad’s Church Softball games, said…we should get matching shirts to wear in Disney. Then my Admin Asst told me how she and her family always wear matching color shirts-the logic, it just makes it easier to keep track of everyone-should they go wandering off-made sense.

This all sounded good, but creative I’m not…resourceful though is another thing! We found t-shirts at the Disney Store online for $3.99 each and with a 25% off coupon and Free Shipping deal it made each only $2.74. But no one could decide on just one character---so we each got our favorites…Glenn got Mickey on a burgundy shirt, I got Eyeore on a purple shirt, Erika got Pooh on a pink shirt and Austin got cars on a red shirt. Good we’re done right? Not quite.

Glenn suggested we should probably take along sweatshirts as it is to be cold in the restaurants and cool in the evenings while watching the fireworks displays. I thought perfect, I could make one design for all 6 of us. Only one problem…I’ve never done this before, artist-nope not me! Heck, I wasn’t even into arts and crafts as a kid! And while making an iron on sounded easy enough-I didn’t know where to begin!

So I did what I have come to do with so many of my questions-put it out to all the DIS people. I guess I posted the question in the wrong section because the one moderator came back and said—moving it to the “T-shirt boards”. Okay, now I have progress—there is a t-shirt board! Unfortunately I couldn’t find the t-shirt board or my posting anywhere. Sooooo back to the drawing board-literally.

The one day I seen the DIS Creative Boards---it was like a major eye opening experience! People were willing to help those of us creatively challenged. Wow!!!! I asked for help from anyone willing. No one responded. Then I found a designers image and asked her if possible to customize it-no response. I later found out that designer-had some of her designs stolen and someone was selling them on e-bay---people got nerve. Eventually I found several very, very , very nice designers who were willing to help. I thought I was making 1 sweatshirt and I ended up with…well, here are my pictures. Thank you to all the designers who helped and gave advice on how to do them! Beware Disney OCD kicking in full throttle!
