Got any favorites?
Goin cross-country trip in the planning stage.
Whats there to do that we "can't miss"????
All help is appreciated and Thank you all in advance!

It's a big country - how about being a bit more specific - are you looking for So Cal 'can't miss' or stuff in between too? How much time will you have?

In So Cal - you have to go to at least 1 beach (any time of year is good). There are lots of opinions about the best beach on the boards - it depends on what you like really, and how old the family members are.

Also Hollywood is a natural - to see the Chinese Theater and footprints & for Disney fans a movie at the El Capitan. I love Griffith observatory. Also you should at least see the outside of the Walt Disney Concert Hall - even better to go for a concert. The Hollywood Bowl is fun in summer.

San Diego is worth a trip too - esp for the zoo and/or wild animal park ( actually north of SD). Legoland is good for little ones.

Since you're driving you might want to go thru Vegas. I'm not a gambler, but it's still interesting to see. Wild architecture. And not far away from Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon really.

San Franscisco is our best city - probably the 2nd best city in the country after NYC. (Chicago/New Orleans fans will beat me up over this I'm sure). If you're a fan of Walt the new Disney Family Museum is beautiful.

Lots of choices - you'll have a blast just planning this trip!

Well to tell you the truth, the trip is still in the planning stages, so I'm kinda using this thread to get recommendations of whats good, what you cant miss, etc. How long? Again, it all depends on our final itinerary. So. You know? I'm kinda just trying to get information.

So are you trying to get information on the attractions along
the way from NY to Cal? Or for information of attractions
once you get to Cal?

a little of both. just trying to get a good bunch of recommendations to make an itinerary.

If you're a AAA member they can help you with the actual road trip plans - not as critical as it used to be back in the non-GPS days, but since they are travel professionals they probably could make good recommendations for along the way. I will say that the southwest path - Texas to New Mexico, Arizona and the Cal desert - can get pretty monotonous ( we drove from Dallas to SoCal last year ). Sedona Arizona is pretty - but that's about it imho! On the other hand we drove from Portland to Highway 1 on the west coast in Oregon a couple of years ago and that was absolutely beautiful ( but you have to get to the coast somehow!)

I remember childhood trips and nearly non-stop driving took 3-4 days. I think you'd want 3 weeks or more to really enjoy the trip and explore. And save at least 3 days for Disneyland!
