Hi All ... fairly new T2i owner here. I have the kit lens, the 1.4/50mm, and the 55-250 Zoom. I have a feeling I'll leave the 1.4 on most of the time and pull out the Zoom for AK. I saw a friend's 10-22mm and I'm in love but just can't justify the $800+ right before the trip. So I was thinking of renting one ... there are a few companies out there so I figured I'd see what folks have used.

TIA!:goodvibes

I have rented from borrowlenses dot com.

Excellent experience the two times I have rented from them.

If you follow them on twitter, they occasionally offer last minute deals (25% off) the rental of a particular lens.

I'm waiting to see what will be the on sale lens for my upcoming trip to DLR / Aulani.

My friends have rented from lensrentals dot com and they sing their praises just as well.

I have used BorrowLenses and LensProToGo successfully. Both offer discounts to NAPP members, as does LensRentals.

Be careful to do apples-to-apples comparisons. Factor in shipping and insurance (if you plan to buy it). The costs of those items varies widely between the vendors.

If you plan to rent a lens for a trip, consider renting it only for the portion of the trip you'll use it. On my last trip, I mailed the lens back four days before I returned home. That saved a decent amount of money. Also make sure that you have it delivered before you leave for your trip and make sure that someone is there to sign for it. I screwed up the dates on our last trip and had it delivered the day we were leaving. Fortunately, we were leaving in the afternoon and the lens arrived about 2 minutes before we left.

If you have access to a car while in the area, thelenspal.com is about a 1/2 hour from the parks and has great customer service and prices. If you pick up and drop off you can save a lot of money bypassing the shipping charges.

They also ship and might be worth comparing to the other sites people have recommneded.

I just rented for the first time from BorrowLenses.Com as well. The bonus for me is they have a pick up station here so the "shipping" was $20 instead of $50. Super smooth transaction. Will be renting from them again.:thumbsup2

I was in the EXACT same boat as you. This company can't be beat. They ship it a day early at no extra charge and shipping to and from is included. I love the Canon 10-22.

Wow! $50 shipping! Holy TOLEDO! Lol, I have never really thought about renting a lens, and that number right there would certainly discourage me from doing so...

Mike, I rented my lens for graduation from rentglass.com in Overland Park, KS. I picked it up and returned it in person so there was no charge for shipping. I checked a couple days ago and they do stock the Canon 10-22.

If you reserve early it will be less but yeah, the shipping is crazy. They overnight them to and from.

I'll have to check to see how much they want per day. ProPhotoRental was something like $5-7 a day after so many days.

I'm thinking it wa $39 for one week or $29 per week if you do 2 weeks. I was thinking about it for our December trip, but don't know yet if I'll do it. I have the Tokina, but haven't used it much. I love the fast 2.8, but would love the extra 6 mm in length. I think it might make it more of a walk-around to leave on the camera instead of always swapping back and forth. If nothing else, renting it once my cure me of continually wanting to buy it!

I sent you a pm.

geesh, wouldn't it be a kick in the pants to rent a lens thinking you need more of this or that, but you end up using your good ole standbys more than the rental....

I vowed to use mine exclusively so that I could a feel for it and really "judge" it. The only time I didn't was when we went to the shark encounter, I used my 50 there.

thanks everyone!!! :)

I stumbled upon a used 10-22 and snagged it! I have 30 days to return it but I'm in love. I will however file this information away for the next time I want to try a lens.
