Do nikons come with a charger for the Rechargeable EN-EL9 batteries or is it a seperate purchase?

Yep, a charger came with my D40. I also purchased a spare battery, but it didn't come with a charger.

Are all En-EL9 batteries rechargeable? I would think so, but I wanted to make sure before I did something stupid and blew up my camera.

The EN-EL9 battery is a rechargable battery. If you purchase a 3rd party equilivent say from sterlingtek.com then that too is a rechargable and will be able to be recharged in your charger that came with the camera.

Actually, that's incorrect.

I have two third party replacement batteries for my D40. One will not charge on the Nikon Charger, one will.

That sucks.

I have 3 third party batteries for my D50 and D300 and all of them work on both Nikon chargers I have. 2 of the batteries I got from sterlingtek and 1 I got from Best Buy.

Yeah, it was a pain in the butt when I first purchased my camera.

I purchased the extra battery with the camera. Plugged it in to charge it and there was nothing on the charger to indicate it was charging (no lights). After many hours of research, I discovered the battery required it's own charger from the battery's manufacturer. I contacted the company I purhased the camera from and they said they would send along what I needed (purchased the camera on ebay). A week later, to my surpirse, they sent me the charger I needed, but they also included another battery that would charge on the Nikon charger. I didn't ask for the 3rd battery, they simply included it with the charger for the other battery. And, no charge for any of it either, and no shipping costs.

It all worked out in the end. But having purchased the camera from ebay I was not looking forward to dealing with what many times deos not work out so well with purchase problems on ebay.

BTW, the battery that would not charge on the Nikon charger was manufactured by Synergy Digital. Not sure who manufactures the 3rd one I have, it simply says "Replace EN-EL9" on it.

I'm having the same problem. My camera came with a Nikon battery. Transaction was great, wonderful customer service and everything went smooth until I went to recharge the extra battery. It show it charged but once in the camera, nothing! So they sent me a new battery, nothing again. I leave for WDW next week and really need that back up battery so I'm back on the phone today. Mine is a BP-EL3E they sent me for a D90. (7.4v 2100m Ah Li-ion):confused3

The D90 takes the same battery as the D80 and D300 which is the EN-EL3e. If your not going to get the OEM battery then go to sterlingtek and get an equivalent there. Great prices and they work great (I've had 2 for just about 2 years with no issues on both my D50 and D300)

I've got 2 EN-EL3e's for my D200 and fortunately both work with the Nikon charger. First battery came with the Nikon charger as part of the camera kit. Second I ordered from Amazon. If I need a third I'll order from Amazon again even though thier price is stupid. Thanks for the headsup.:thumbsup2

Probably does not pertain to anyone here but I thought it might be a good time to mention the ole Nikon battery recall just in case. Resellers might be still pawning them off to the unsuspecting. Originally packaged with D100, D50 & D70 kits and also sold seperately.
Here's the link EN-EL3 Nikon will replace defective batteries with a EN-EL3a or the EN-EL3e.
