Please don't flame me, because I really am sick. :faint:
I am not trying to start anything and I do not want to cause any unwanted concern, but I just got back this morning from 4-day Wonder Cruise (5/30) and all day have been sufferring from flu-like symptoms,
Fever, Stomach Cramps, Nausea & Dizziness.
I know it IS flu and cold season and warnings were everywhere about washing hands etc. to try to prevent catching something but since feeling this way, I was wondering if anyone else who has recently been on Wonder has any symptoms also?
You have to figure that gathering a couple thousand of your closest friends and confining them at sea(even though luxuriously) you are bound to at least get the sniffles or something. And what I got is probably just your ordinary "Flu-Bug" but just in case, I thought that I'd at least ask around.
Again, I am not trying to start anything and if anything I am just wanting to warn everyone about heeding the flu prevention warnings. Use Purel(etc.), wash your hands regularly, and follow all prevention methods that you can.

Tony M, I am sorry to hear you aren't feeling well. Hope it didn't ruin your trip. I think you should report this to DCL. Just incase there is some type of virus (like norwalk) going around with other cruisers, Disney needs to have the documentation.

No one here will be flaming you!! I, for one, truly appreciate your sharing. Everyone should be aware to take the extra precautions necessary to stay germ free and healthy. Thank you for your concern and for taking the time to post. Hope you feel better real soon!!

I got sick on the third evening of the 5/23 Wonder cruise. Different symptoms though...cough, congestion and fever. I have been on antibiotics for a week and still have it. Thank goodess it wasn't Norwalk. I can't imagine getting on a plane with those symptoms! Anyway, I think what might have been just a cold turned into a sinus infection due to the flight home. Getting on an aiplane when you are sick just makes it worse. I'm glad that neither of our cruises were totally ruined.

The thing that really bothers me though is that I am so careful about hand washing. I was making fun of the notices everywhere. It's hard for me to believe that people have to be told not only to wash their hands but how to wash them. If I can get sick on board anyone can. It won't stop me from cruising again but I will be a bit nervous about it. Getting sick on vacation stinks!

We just got back from the 5/30 cruise and my wife threw up violently on tuesday night about 3am. When she woke up the next morning about 9am she was fine. I have some sort of flu like symptons now so I don't know what is going on.

Yep, any cruise can be a breeding ground for illnesses, lots of folks in small quarters. But I think alot of folks forget they may have also been exposed if they flew to the ship, on the plane. 100 something people crammed into even tighter quarters, breathing recycled air!!!
One of the Princess cruise ships to Alaska has nearly 400 sick passengers and crew on board, not sure if it is Norwalk yet, but that's just a fancy name for catching the flu.
This illness is very common in college dorms, nursing homes and hospitals too.

A Day later and I am still sick but now only with sinus/upper respiratory infection & fever. No Nausea today, but fever has kept me down quite a bit.
I also paid little attention to the flu & cold season warning signs posted all around the ship but now wish I did. I always wash hands regularly and keep Purel handy. My wife even gives me a hard time about my fumigation of our stateroom upon check-in with a complete can of Lysol. I spray everything, floors, beds, curtains, ALL bathroom surfaces. I mean everything. It's a good thing that the luggage does not arrive for an hour or so later and we evacuate to Deck 9 in order to let the air become breathable again.
And even so, I still got sick.
At least it does not seem to be serious. Even with all our precautions, we got sick. Most likely our immune system weakness was probably caused by our enjoying the cruise too much. Staying up too late, Too little sleep, exotic foods, adult beverages, too much sun exposure. Too much fun probably led to this illness.
Caution to all to do all that they can to try to stay well, but still have fun.

I can see lack of sleep and overdoing it as being contributing factors, you can get worn out having so much fun :) Usually its the drive that gets me. Hand washing is a good thing, keeping your hands away from your face ,eyes and mouth also helps. I've survived many office plagues this way. I think I'll take a bottle of good ole lysol wipes with me on my trip and stay away from the kiddos onboard as much as possible.

I does sound like something my father picked up at WDW world our last trip. It took nearly a month to shake whatever bug it was, worst of all the doc at home really couldn't identify what he had :( Started out with the vomiting and nausea and settled in his lungs and sinuses. My mother and I never got it.
Made the drive home a bit of an adventure.

Hope you feel better soon and hope it didn't ruin your trip.

Out of curiousity did you get a flu shot this year? Might be good precausionary measures for travelors.

Lysol and don't forget to open the verandah door! :) Let the fresh air in! Yeah I would want to evacuate to after bombing a room with a can of lysol  !

Just an FYI, before you boarded all the surfaces in your room that you would come in contact with, dresser, drawer and door handles, bathroom surfaces etc were cleaned "wiped down" with disinfectant by the stateroom host. That's why you don't get to go to your room till 1:30 or so, they really CLEAN the room, not just "freshen it up".

Hope everyone is feeling better now. One of the things I always fight is the dry air on the airplane. We make a point of taking bottled water on planes so we can stay hydrated.

On the 2/2003 Western, people chose to get off the ship in Cozumel rather than be quaranteened in their room. Others might just have chosen not to admit they were sick or blame it on sea-sickness. The last night of our cruise we were woken by the next stateroom over - the 2 children and mom were violently ill. The kids were constantly in the kids' clubs. My son, husband and I didn't frequent the Lab - he didn't want to go this trip. We used Purell - before and after our meals and just used it after touching surfaces. We tried not to hold the handrails - we were almost fanatical about it.

I'm sorry you are/were so sick though - germs are everywhere so the only key to staying healthy is to keep them out of your body.

Unfortunately, the flu shot does not protect you from all viruses nor does it protect you from any stomach viruses. It only helps w/ Influenza and even that isn't full proof.

We were not on the Wonder but we were on the 5/22 Magic and 4 out of the 5 of us came home with cold/sinus problems. I am still sick with a sinus infection that has possibly turned into bronchitis. I am a fanatic about washing my hands and I still ended up sick. Luckily it didn't really hit me til the end of the cruise and the day of disembarkment was the worst (5/29). I have already taken an antibiotic and I am better but I am still not completely over it. It's very frustrating.

alexandrew: there are signs in all the resteraunts on the ships about it being cold/flu season and to wash your hands frequently.

Thats correct...I remember seeing them last October, and again in January....how silly those signs are....a 12 month cold and flu season...even longer than the NBA season....

eek, this scares me. We will be on the Wonder early July.
I have never gotten sick after any cruise.
Now i'm worried,

Boy...this cruising idea is sounding like more and more fun by the day :(

Are the room kept really cool? I ask because I'm wondering if going in and out might be part of the sinus/cold issues.

I suppose if I can survive the winters here I'll live through a cruise.

Flu Shots..yep know they don't help GI probs (aka food poisoning, ingested bacteria like norwalk..etc) but they tend to help lesson the effects of colds and if you do get the flu that as well. Everyone is different though.

I work in the health care system and it is no longer Flu Season. Any flu shot given last Oct/Nov would have worn off by now so you can still catch a cold. Bronchitis and sinus infections are not contagious...they are complications of colds or allergies just like an ear infection. Since there are so many people cruising at one given time, random illnesses can happen...they're not considered epidemic until a certain ratio of people get sick. Colds can still go around year round but more common during winter months...but it's not the same as the Flu.

ragdoll...
about your comment about how amazing it is that people don't wash their hands...
i work with very highly educated people and i am in total shock at the number i see in the bathroom not washing their hands...
needless to say, i always use a paper towel to open the door of the bathroom....:(
