Recent Floods and Devastation

I know we aren’t the only ones suffering from weather related devastation, but Kentucky is really going through it right now. About 2-3 hours south of where I am, there have been devastating floods. There were schools totally underwater just days before a new school year is due to start. I can’t imagine the devastation. I know many people with family in eastern Kentucky. One lady I know has a nephew who was swept away by the flood waters. He was able to catch himself in a rooftop to wait for help. This happened in the middle of the night when people were least prepared or expecting it.

In addition to this most recent disaster, western Kentucky was one of the hardest hit by the tornadoes last winter, where an entire town was basically leveled, and central Kentucky had crippling ice storms as well. I feel lucky to be alive right now.

The people affected could really use your prayers right now if that is your thing. There are also a number of organizations accepting donations of money, cleaning supplies, etc.

I am hoping none of our DIS friends have suffered any losses. ❤️

ETA: latest report says 15 confirmed dead.

NKY here and I've been watching as I have distant relatives in the area. I donated to the fund set up by the governor's office. I don't understand how it's feasible to pipe oil thousands of miles but we can't pipe water out west. I mean if that pipeline were to leak or burst...water, lots easier to clean than oil.

My son was in Carlisle ky this past week at 4H camp when it happened. He is on his way back home right now. We are in Campbell county. He’s an adult and volunteers for the week every year. A couple years ago there were heavy rains that fell in the camp area, but not this bad. Some minor flooding in the actual town. Still a little worrisome. Mason county seems to get a lot of heavy rain when we have these storms.

It’s sad that there are areas suffering from drought at the same time that other areas have devastating floods.

USA consumes about 20 million barrels of oil per day, which is 840 million gallons. In comparison, we use 322 Billion gallons of water per day. So any pipeline infrastructure would have to be massive. What I read is oil pipelines are typically a few feet in diameter (Keystone is 36"), but a water pipeline would need to be many meters (China has just done one that is over 9m in diameter, and travels about 700 miles). If we were to do one from eastern to western states that would be as much as 4x the distance. Eastern states would also have to agree to let the western states have their water. Look at issues on the Rio Grande river, where overuse for agriculture has the river drying out. Some eastern states have abnormally dry or drought conditions themselves - even though my area has seen recent rain causing quite a bit of localized flooding, we are still officially in drought. The pipeline would need to be big enough to be able to surge run-off from a large storm, and then may go unused other times when conditions are more typical. It's been thought of and analyzed, but doesn't seem to be the best solution. Sounds like even desalinization plants would end up being less expensive than water pipelines, though comes with their own set of environmental issues.

Just one word, terrible.

Prayers are with the people of Kentucky. And Missouri.

Western KY here. I've been seeing the devastating pictures and just listened to the Governor where he said that at least 4 children are among the deceased. Heartbreaking for all involved.

Devastating. So sorry to hear.

16 dead, 6 children with 4 from same famiy :( Expected to climb.

I hope Kentucky gets all the help they need.

That's so sad! I hadn't heard about any KY floods. We've had some localized flooding this week in our metro area thanks to annual monsoon rains here in AZ...some of the news footage was pretty wild, with water gushing into people's homes in a rural area of one town on the outskirts of the area.

My son did an internship in SE Arizona. It started in late September due to the monsoon season. Until then I had no idea they had monsoons there. What part of Arizona are you located in?
