Also, keep in mind that the last couple of weeks have featured the NFL Pro Bowl, the Super Bowl, and now the festivities surrounding the Daytona 500. That's a lot of celebrities and VIPs, too. Idk if VIPs have blocks of days or mornings or whatever, but it's a consideration for athletes and executives and their families.

And today begins a holiday weekend. Even yesterday wait times seemed big all around the resort, so people getting a jump on PD weekend are in full force now.

Thanks for your thorough post. Curious about how you did this part...
I have my phone set to "auto-lock" after 5 minutes. That allows me to keep my app open without worrying the screen will turn off on me. I'm thinking that's that they mean.

Our day so far:
6:45 - out of our Little Mermaid room
6:58 - loading into bus
7:01 - out to DHS
7:15 - through bagless scan
7:18 - through ticket tap stiles on the right
7:18-7:50- Tried to find 4 bars on TMobile. Moved around to about 5 different places. Settled by Frozen, where it stayed mostly 4 bars.
7:59:50 - launched app
8:00:05 - find out more
- Join Boarding Group was NOT red.
- Clicked My Status. Join Boarding Group was active.

BG 22! I did it, thanks to all!

Now waiting for them to start boarding. Got breakfast at Docking Bay.
Adding:
9:36 -BG called
9:42-entered queau

I had the same issues with version 5.8 but now much faster with version 5.8.1

That may have been what helped me this morning after I deleted and re-installed. Only now my phone wants to update...gah!!

Take it for what it’s worth. 3 tries:

(1) 2/8 - stopped at little mermaid theater on way to TSL. In park at 720am. 3 phones. Layered them. First opened at 759:30, second at 759:45 and last at 759:50. Last phone got in first and BG 46. First phone iPhone 7 on us cell, second iPhone 11 on is cell. Last phone iPhone 11 on Verizon. All on data.

(2) 2/11 - stopped at bathrooms on way to TSL. Arrived in park at 730 (go figure). Same process. The first phone (759:30 iPhone 7) got it with BG 90.

(3) 2/14 - arrived in park at 732am. Behind little mermaid theater. Same process for first two phones. I opened app at 759:00 and then went to home screen. At 759:50 reopened app. Counted to 10. Hit my status and got in. BG 22. I was at the restrooms going into TSL as I had a little one with a headache and was trying to be out of the crowds. the guys next to me starting refreshing at 758 and never got a red button.

Today is our last park day and we decided to give RotR one more ride. My wife, who apparently is some sort of BG Jedi, got group 8. She has also pulled 5& 4 this trip. She is on a iPhone 11 and presses the RotR picture in the app@8(using my I watch as a countdown). Join boarding group is red every time. I did the same today and it was red but I think I was slower adding my party.
Congrats!
Picture in the app as in located above “find out more” button?
I wish they would do longer hours to have more people happy and less people frustrated, until crowds are less and the kinks worked out hopefully. Not sure when they will ever go to Fastpass, it would be a disaster right now
IDK, CM are working long hours as it is. I’m sure some would appreciate the OT but they have real lives too. Not saying you, but seems many guests tend to forget it. Cannot imagine the number of frustrated to down right verbally abusive people they deal with on a daily basis. Kudos to them!

Hmmm
I just deleted my app and re-installed is it's loading much faster. Anyone with Iphone issues might give it a try.
I did this early January. Has it updated again since?

Thank you for that

It's so easy to feel like they're making this mess on purpose

It would not surprise me if they are intentionally throttling back capacity in an attempt to artificially suppress demand. People will hear how difficult it is and give up...like the restaurant that nobody goes to anymore because it's too crowded.

I can tell you 100% this is not the case. They are not trying to suppress demand.

Practice today went better than yesterday. I had the app open at 7:55 on front page. At 8:00:02 I pressed "find out More". I went to the next page... "Join boarding group" was not lit up. But I pressed "My Status"... It went to the next page and it said the dreaded "You can't join any boarding groups at the moment".. (by then it had to be 4 seconds past 8 am) So I backed out of the page, back to the home page and tried again. This time, going through the steps, I was able to select my group for a BG. However, it was at least 15 seconds after 8 when I finally got to the page to select BG's. Had I been in the park, I would have gotten a BG today but it would have been in the higher numbers.

These glitches and inconsistencies cause me concern and anxiety. I guess it is just the nature of this whole process of getting BGs and computers and what not. The best I can do is be prepared for glitches.. hope for the best but be prepared for the worst.

Agree completely and this is why I think there is so much angst surrounding this whole boarding group process. Essentially we are at the mercy of our devices and the Disney app no matter how much planning, practicing or research we do. It can all go out the window with one simple glitch. Very frustrating.

i think they are trying to manage capacity and expectations to exactly what they can handle, especially on what should be a very busy weekend. Personally, I would far rather not have a backup boarding group at all and know for sure I am not riding than to have a backup and wait around all day, when they know they will get 70 (or whatever) groups in and not one more.

I wonder if any of the BGs are held back for GET? When it was taking 10 or 12 or (remember when) 60 minutes for backups to go, they have time to work through a group of people standing in front of them. If everything is gone in 1 minute they can't help more than a group or 2.

I agree with that.

I would rather they are overly cautious with the BG they give out so that if someone is going to miss out, they know at 8 AM instead of 8 PM after waiting around all day.

Different people are going to have different opinions on that though. I'd rather have a chance if there is one (even if not guaranteed). You can choose not to confirm the BG if you get a backup. If they're super conservative with backups there's no undoing that.

But we don't have hoppers so aren't going anywhere else. We'll be in DHS all day both days so it's a no brainer for us.

There's a conspiracy theory that breakfast sales at Docking Bay 7 are not doing well on Wednesdays and Fridays, so there's speculation that Disney intentionally throttles RotR boarding groups in order for the people who are just waiting around for their BG to be called go to DB7 instead and spend money.

Is it just me, or is anyone else doubting the accuracy of what that CM said, that groups hold more people now?

They are filling way faster than before. Even if BG have more people than they did back in December and January to account for the lower number handed out, it’s still clear that BG (no matter how they play with back up va regular) are gone sooner, leading me to guess that less people are getting through the attraction than during the beginning and even during busy holiday time. If BG had more people in them but everything else remained similar, they would still be lasting longer than they are. Right, or am I off in my thinking?

I have to think total operating hours are making a big impact. We would often see patterns where the ride would be down for extended amounts but then push people through at a very fast rate when up. There’s just less time in a day to do that when you’ve got 2+ less hours in a day.

I updated the app this morning and now it is functioning worse than before. I've tried opening it 10-15 times and on most of my attempts it will not open at all. Just sits on the purple castle screen for 5-6 minutes and then shuts down entirely. I have gotten it to actually open 3 times and it opened in about 5 seconds on each of those tries, but definitely not consistent at all. At least on the previous version the app would eventually open. It just took about 2 minutes for that to happen. Now I can't be sure it will open at all. I guess I need to call Disney tech support.
