Ok we stepped inside the door of the store across the street from Anaheim produce and had full bars on LTE Verizon. Had app open to home page a bit before 7:55. As soon as my phone hit 8:00 with shaking fingers I hit find out more and join boarding group turned red within a second. Tapped it and select all and to my shock got boarding group 3. We walked toward RnR and a lady asked if we wanted first train of the day so we immediately walked on and skipped preshow. Off within minutes and hit ToT 8:05 fast pass. There things went wrong. We immediately got through preshow but the line was insane on other side only running half of the elevators. Then VIP groups took entire elevators. The teen had to go to the bathroom and decided to leave the line. I did get on and off shortly after and we walked to GE and got right onto RotR. As far as I know glitch free but possibly a tiny b mode part but I’m not sure. It was amazing.

thank you for this. I've been reading that folks have been launching their app 5 seconds prior to 7 am (or 8 if park opening is 8 am) and when I try this my app freezes most of the time and/or asks me for my log in id (weirdly). It has never done this in the past. I was wondering if I had my app open prior to park opening if it would still work and I'm so happy to hear that it did for you! I'm sure if I wait until 5 seconds prior to launch MDE we would never get a boarding pass due to the number of times it just freezes.

So is this group both parks? CA and FL? Were people at the parks in Florida before 7 this morning with a park open at 8?

One thing I have noticed is that TsL characters, Olaf and Mickey-Minnie seemed to arrive at 9AM instead of the usual 7AM, causing increased lines (at least for Olaf and Mickey-Minnie) in the first hour...
Can anyone who was there report if the lines for the TSL characters were insane?

Ok - I always seem to be the outlier with this. I am trying from home and I *still* am not getting the backups message. I’ve even shut the app and reopened it. And, for the record, I have gotten the message previously, but always minutes after everyone else.

So strange. I've been practicing from home for a couple weeks and thought I'd try today. Within seconds I got a weird red error saying they weren't accepting anymore people to the ride, not even the backup group message. I killed the app and 10 minutes later am able to get through without the backup message or the red message.

I was trying from home and was shocked to find the same thing. At 8:17 I was still not getting the backup group message so thought possibly they'd changed things with the 8am opening. Never did see a backup group message and eventually went directly to a grayed out BG box and all boarding groups were full.

Did a little practice run today from home. Started a little before 8 and then at 8, it still said closed and a red button never came on. By 7:01, it finally came on but at backups already. I'm hoping it was just the bad signals from being on the train.

Hey, @xipotec! So glad everything worked out amazingly well for you! Yes, RotR is awesome--that's why this thread exists!

Question on the bolded part of your post. I'm confused about your app being open and then "moved to MDE." If my MDE app is open, then it's on the front screen, the one with the Find Out More button on it. Have I missed something here? Thanks!

Group 3!! Fabulous ride! Went straight to RotR as soon as my boarding group was called, then hit FP+ for Star Tours. Then to Oga's for breakfast, and then FP+ for SDD. now waiting for Savi's to build myself a lightsaber.

I apologize if this has been answered... have we decided on any rhyme or reason for 1 hour return time versus 2 hours? Is it only 60 minutes now or does it still vary? The 2-hour window provides for so much more flexibility/freedom.

Just returned from a 4 day WDW trip late last night...

Went to HS on Saturday, Feb. 1 - Open at 7:00
5:58 Bus arrived at AKL-Jambo
6:27 In park (2 people through bag check and tapped in to the right)
Headed down Sunset Blvd. to point where people heading towards RnRC and ToT were being held
6:59:55 2 people trying, WiFi turned off, AT&T on iPhone XRs - Launched MDE app, "Find Out More" - Join Boarding Group not red - Went back and forth to Find Out More several times (Both of us!), still not red. (Freaking out at this point!) I went out of app completely and back in, then got red Join Boarding Group and BG 67 (73 and above were Back Ups).
12:05 Got notification, time to report, Return by 2:00
12:14 Joined queue
12:53 Off ride

A few things...
Our plan was to take a Minnie Van to HS. Started trying to request one at about 5:45, never worked. Headed to bus instead and got lucky that one was there. Found out the next day from a Minnie Van driver that they don't start until 6:30 am!

I was reading every word of this thread for weeks before this trip and thought we did everything right. I have no idea why we weren't getting the red button. I'm glad I made the decision to kill the app and start fresh. If I didn't, we would have definitely been far back in the back up groups.

I thought about not updating but at the same time I don't want to be in the park and open the app and have it tell me I need to use the latest version of the app for any reason. Interesting that the old versions still work ok, thats good to know.

When Disney took away the ability to change the party on a fp+, I stopped updating. I didn’t have to update for a year. I updated my ios and the wait times stopped working, so had to update the app- plus I needed access to boarding groups. I’ve stopped updating again because they’ve made it harder to change fp. As long as it’s working, no need to update

It seems to be mostly Fl. There is a dedicated thread in the DLR forum. Yep, some people were there at 6:30 or earlier this morning. I wouldn’t show up 90mn before park open...sleep is important too.

The backup pop up doesn’t always appear. At first I assumed there were regular groups still available, because I didn’t get the pop up. But then I figured out I didn’t notice that the wording subtly changed to “backup groups.”

We stopped in line just after going inside. No idea what that means as far as wait time maybe somebody here knows?

Depends on if the wait is for a ride shut-down, or just people not being able to get through part of the queue in their ECV. We ran into an issue where we had to wait for a little bit because there is a part in the queue that is a bit tricky to get through in an ECV.

I have missed a lot of the discussion so I apologize if this has been disproven, but I just assumed that the 1 hour returns are for people in the earlier boarding groups since they should be hanging out in the same park waiting to be called fairly soon. 2 hours for people later in the day who might have left to nap, park hop, ect.

The thinking I’ve seen is that they don’t want the first groups of the day to wait around 2 hours before coming to ride. Need to get the queue moving so they can move on to call later groups. They may also use the 1-hour window later in the evening, but I’m not certain.

Is someone still keeping a chart of how long it takes regular BG and backup BG to run out each day? I've lost my link to it. I haven't checked in quite a while but thought I'd see how the new 8am openings were working. I'm hoping less than a minutes to backups isn't the new normal. But I also see many people on here getting single digit BGs which is encouraging. I have people visiting and really don't want to screw it up for them. I've been on plenty of myself but suddenly now I feel all the pressure most you felt on your vacations I'm sure.

Wow what an experience. Everything seemed to be working when we went through from what I’ve watched online. Got group 10 this morning and got called back at 823. Used our SDD FP at 830 and walked over. Walked right on without any wait. Had a 2 hour window to return. Had app closed out completely and watched second hand on clock app. Opened app right at 755:55. As soon as it opened I hit find out more and join boarding group was red. Thanks to all the great folks in this thread for all the info to make it possible.
