I am not going until the 17th but it is also an 8amnoprning (for now) so will be watching how the crowds are. I think your be there by 6:30 is a good idea - I am similar to you in that I would rather be there an hour early than 5 minutes too late
We were there over MLK weekend. HS opened at 7:00 am. Took an Uber from CBR at 6:15 am (we waited for a bus, but decided to go for the Uber after 10 minutes). We arrived at HS at 6:25, you are dropped off right by where the Skyliner exits. We did not take a back-pack so we skipped the security line. At this point, the initial crowds were already entering the park. We were through the tapstiles and standing infront of Frozen sing a long by 6:35 am. At 7:00 am we got boarding group 26. The people behind us, group 17, people right in front of us, group 59. Getting there super early doesn't do anything to increase your chances of a boarding group. I also had been following multiple blogs that the gates were opening before 6:30 am the week before we arrived and that the initial crowds were being let in. So I felt comfortable with leaving CBR at 6:15 am. Also, I was at a resort that was very close to HS. So lots of factors going into my choices. Good luck!
