? re: The Passion of the Christ (movie)

Hi MaryJo

That's exactly what I was saying on the previous page. How can I not watch after what He was able to do for us? My 15 year old DD also feels the same way. I'm not sure about my just turned 13 year old boy. I think I may wait until it will have a greater positive impact on him.

Thanks for the link. :)

Towncrier...no problem...we don't expect men to make sense anyway!!! :p

LMAO...now I have double posted and cannot delete one of my posts because I do "not have access"...hehehehe...I give up.

<font color=navy>Great, Donna.... now us women will be accused of always repeating ourselves!

Mary Jo...I hear that all the time from my family...I guess I DO tend to repeat.

It is interesting to hear people acknowledge that while the experience may be painful, they somehow owe it to Christ (or themselves) to see the film...that they can "suffer" with Christ a little bit.

These types of feelings go back a long way in Christian history...think of the monks of old who wore hair shirts or robes made of very rough cloth...others have practiced literal self flagellation. Others fast on a regular basis. The Catholic faith incorporates the concept of "penance" while others feel that no penance is necessary. Lots of Christians give up things for Lent - others don't.

Everyone should just follow his or her heart on this one BUT PLEASE DON'T TAKE YOUR KIDS and don't look down on anyone who doesn't attend.

BTW, did anyone see "The Last Temptation of Christ" or read the book? That movie was so condemned byt the Christian community, but it made me think about - and understand- Christ's sacrifice more deeply than I ever had before.

Good points, missypie. :)

I read on another board that some parents are planning on taking their 9 year olds, etc. I feel that is too young. :(

I'm certainly not going to judge anyone who does or doesn't want to see this film - that would be a little presumptuous, I think.

It's so interesting that we humans have a need to see or visualize the life of Christ and the passion especially. Through out history the story has been told in paintings and stained glass and in Passion plays and of late, in movies. But God chose to send his Son at a time when there were no portraits painted, no photographs made, no news footage of the execution. God obviously did not think it necessary that we see it...but something inside us makes many of us want/need to.

I can't wait to see it although I'm afraid I'll cover my eyes a lot and cry my eyes out but it's something I feel I must do especially during this Lenten season. I cried hysterically during "Jesus Christ Superstar" when I was 10 years old because Jesus died at the end. I'll never forget that. So I'm going to be a basket case!

All I've been hearing is that the movie is accurate to the Bible by many different people and that the movie itself is NOT anti-semitic but that it could invoke anti-semitism. Just as "Shindler's (sp?) List" could invoke prejudice against Germans or "Roots" could invoke prejudice against whites and so on....it's the same thing to me. But people weren't up in arms over those movies.

Mel Gibson is not anti-semitic as many have already said; you must be thinking of his 85 year old father.

I also haven't heard a word from my Church about this movie...not a peep. I'm a devout Catholic by the way...

I can't believe how many people are already judging this movie (anti-semitism specifically) without even seeing it. That's just silly.

I've been trying to buy tickets for Saturday but they aren't on sale as far as I can see yet...bummer.:(

Please, please, please everyone! This move is not about Mel Gibson.

It's an experience about the sacrifice of the one who the Bible calls our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. And who many of us here call our Lord and Saviour.

I know when I watch this movie, I will not be giving one thought to Mel Gibson.

Not about Mel Gibson?

If people came to you and said, Would it be worth it if it caused pain to millions by telling the story in this way?
Would it be worth renewing a prejudice and hatred simmering for decades?
WOULD it be worth it to spill the blood of innocents when zealots find, from your creation (something that could very well be little more than myth and conjecture) a new reason for tyranny? And for Profit no less?
Would it truly be worth all this?

With Mel Gibson, it was a resounding YES.

I think this does have something to do with Mel Gibson.

I'm sorry but if this movie were truly about Jesus Christ, it would be about finally finding a way to end the practice of religious segregation, war and hate, in the name of any God.

And with that, I bid you all a good evening. I won't be visiting this topic again on any board.

robin you are certainly entitled to your opinion...I am sorry you feel so upset about it. I will not condemn until I have actually seen the movie...if I were to condemn at all...is it our place to condemn anyone?

Jesus suffered much pain for me. I can certainly be prepared for my own pain. Why shouldn't we tell the story this way? Because of pain? We don't even know the meaning of it. The pain I will suffer watching this movie is a drop in the bucket.

Would it be worth renewing a prejudice and hatred simmering for decades?

Just because people will use any excuse to renew their hatreds and predjudices, an experience like this should not be had? What else shouldn't we do in order to pacify the bigots?

Again, these people that may or may not react the way you predict don't need the excuse of a movie.

I think this movie can do just that. One of the steps to ending hate and war in the world will be for people to come to Christ. Or at least strive in every way to live like He did. Maybe if people see the sacrifice that He made in the way He did, as true to fact as we can see it, more people will recognize this sacrifice and want to be worthy of it. I have always thought, "If more people were like Christ what a wonderful, peaceful, loving world this would be." And believe me, I include myself in that thought.

And with that, I bid you all a good evening. I won't be visiting this topic again on any board.
Goodnight Robin. Sleep well. I'm sorry you won't read this :(

I am going to see this movie on Friday, and I can't wait. I am only 16, and I've never seen an R rated movie in the theatre, and I'm definitely a little bit scared of the emotional impact that the movie will have on me, but that's why I'm going with friends who I know feel the same way I do.

I don't think that schools should be taking all students to see this movie, or that parents should be taking young children before they even see the movie. If a child isn't mature enough to understand the point of the movie, I highly doubt that they will enjoy the experience.

My church is a basically non-demoninational Christian church, and the pastors have encouraged adults and mature teenagers to see the movie. Our youth group is one of several local churches that has reserved an entire theatre to see the movie over the weekend, but it is an outreach open only for high school students. Our sermon on Sunday was also a result of the movie...it was entitled "Who Killed Jesus?" and explained that there are actually seven correct answers, not just one.

Both my church and our local Christian radio station are encouraging people who plan to see the movie at all to see it this weekend, so that the numbers will reflect that there truly is an audience for this type of movie, more than the audience for pointless movies with unecessary violence, sex and language.

I don't think that this movie has anything to do with Mel Gibson. Unless he has completely abandoned the Bible, I don't see how it can truly be anti-semitic. Even if he was making this movie for profit, which I don't believe he did, I would still see it, because I think it will help me understand on a deeper level what my Savior endured so that I can one day be with him in Heaven.

I'm sorry but if this movie were truly about Jesus Christ, it would be about finally finding a way to end the practice of religious segregation, war and hate, in the name of any God.

I just want to share that I don't believe Jesus' purpose in coming to Earth was to end segregation or war. While those would be wonderful things, his purpose was to die so that we could be forgiven.

Even if you hear him say he didn't, erase it from your mind. This is just a movie and he made it for profit, lol.

I think its genious! What better way to get free plublicity and make a load than do a religious movie on a figure that 90%+ of the country probably warships! Just great :smooth:

I think I just heard a voice telling me "Andy Rooney has lost his mind"...oh wait...that was my voice... ...never mind. :p
