? re: The Passion of the Christ (movie)

Our church service has been running a "commercial" for this film for the past four weeks thiny disguised as our normal worship service. Any interest I had in seeing the film has been completely removed by the powers in our church who have been rubbing this film in my face

I agree. I don't think any church should be promoting any commercial film. One reason I like going to church is because it is an escape from all the commercial bombardments in our everyday lives. One would think that the Catholic Church has enough to deal with these days without being in the business of promoting Hollywood films.

Just a clarification. I attend a United Methodist Screening Room (oops, I mean Church).

My friends at work who attend Catholic churches have unanimously told me that they haven't heard a word during services. Those whose priests have mentioned the film have told their congregations that they will reserve judgement on the movie until they've seen it. I seriously doubt, however, that they will actually show the trailer for the film during worship (as our church did several weeks back).

I will definitely be seeing this and I am an avid movie-goer, so something of this caliber I would definitely see.

I heard this morning on the news that Mel Gibson is suppose to be on the O'Reilly Faction tonight and I plan to watch.. I did watch his interview with Diane Sawyer as well.. I have done some research on his beliefs.. and I think a poster said it previously that they are a sect of Catholicsm that does not agree with Vatican 2, so they celebrate their mass in Latin, priest with his back to you as before instead of facing the congregation. I am also assuming women in his church wear something to cover their heads when attending services.

It will be interesting to watch tonight, I did hear that it was a heated discussion. During the Diane Sawyer interview, she asked Mel something ( I cannot exactly remember the question, )but his answer was something to the effect that he would pitch a tent next to the weapons of mass destruction, nobody would find him there. Maybe someone has the exact quote...I did feel rather dismayed with that remark as I do not like when people who are in the public eye use whatever they can to push their politics. I just did not need to hear that... it is upsetting enough that we are losing men in Iraq everyday.

Well...after reading all this thread and hearing everything on TV about this movie, I have no choice, but to see it, lol.

Even though I dispise religion, the nail threw the hand looked pretty cool

A 2 hour movie, pfft, that's nothing:

Passion Play

I had no problem following the German when I went (I think I was 15, my brother was 13). They have translation booklets, so I just followed the Muter, Vater & Sons. :teeth: I wouldn't recommend it for smaller kids though, not because of the subject matter, but because of the length & language barrier.

Now for the goosebump moment: The audience is covered, but the stage has no roof. The entire day had been rainy and cloudy with downpours. But, when they raised the cross, a shaft of sunlight broke through the clouds and shone directly on the actor playing Jesus.

I also got to whack at the Berlin Wall on that trip. :)

Please, please, please everyone! This move is not about Mel Gibson.

It's an experience about the sacrifice of the one who the Bible calls our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. And who many of us here call our Lord and Saviour.

I know when I watch this movie, I will not be giving one thought to Mel Gibson.

I'm going to see it if it ever gets to the area(my inner film buff is curious)

Thanks to the elders at our church, that's all I'll be able to think about. Besides. I don't need to see the movie. I've read The Book.

This is true. Just like when I pay for the Bibles I have purchased and the books I read from the Christian Book Store.

I'm sorry that you have a cynical attitude toward Mel Gibson, but like I have said (a few times here;) ) this movie is about Jesus Christ. Not Mel Gibson.

*edited for typo of name*

CRB#33...very well put. This is NOT about Mel Gibson. All he did was risk his career on the making of this film. I personally believe this came from his heart.

Not one word has been brought up in our parish about the movie. I have had no pressure whatsoever to see the movie...(I am Catholic).
P.S....I read the book too....

This film is going to make a lot of money for Mel Gibson. I smell a sequel

But to those in believe in Christ, the sequel is the best part :p

:teeth: Awesome!!!

Thanks DopeyRN! My church has mentioned it in the sense of it's content. It is also coming upon lent, so it's not that off topic, LOL.

BTW, how are you doing Donna? Haven't seen you much!

Good to see you. :)

<font color=navy>Our pastor spoke of the movie at Mass for the first time on Sunday, and he spoke about it after Mass, during the announcements. He said he hadn't seen the whole movie, but he had seen certain scenes, and he was definitely going to see the whole movie. Even though Mel Gibson practices a different type of Catholicism, the message he delivers through the movie certainly is powerful, and true to the Bible, for the most part (I think except for the Blessed Mother's thoughts, of course, and the depiction of Satan in the movie).

I'm not looking forward to watching the movie. However, I figure it's the least I can do after what Christ did for us. My kids feel the same way - they're 16 and 14 (almost 15), and they're both going to watch it. I'm taking a lot of tissue, because if I cry at Mass, I know I'll be crying during the movie.

Found this article on the Web for anyone who is interested in this movie ...
