DVC is Disney's Vacation Club. It is a timeshare to own points at a Deluxe Resort on Disney Property at WDW and DL. You can check out the
point charts at the link at the top of this page. You pick when you visit and type of room you want at which resort. SO rather than owning a certain week we own points. You pick a resort at which to own your points. Ours are at AKV. We own 210 points and get that amount each year for the life of our contract (unitl 2057, or something like that). So we purchased each point in 2009 for $93 per point. DVC is an expensive timeshare but we wanted to own at Disney.
DVC is really great for people who visit Dsiney often, say every year to every other year and want to stay at a Deluxe resort. You purchase points throught resale (can save money, but financing is a bit more difficult) or direct from DVD. THis route is more expensive but you can insure getting exactly what you want when you want. There are members who do rent their points and you can read those threads as well.

So if you are not a member but wan to try it out you can post a request on the rent/trade board or see who has a reservation to rent. Go to the
point chart to pick out your dates, which resort and what type room you wnat. That will tell you how many "points you need" for your trip. Then post that info ont he rent/trade board and read those stickies as well. People rent points and reservations all the time, it is a common practice. For instance if you want to stay at KV-Kidani, you go look to see how many points you need there, usually points rent for about $10 a point. Just remember you are getting a villa and not a regular hotel room.
You can also rent points from David's rentals a sponsor often seen advertising here. He charges slightly more for the points he gets for you, but he also has safeguards in place so you are not entering an agreement with someone on your own. Many people do this to see if DVC is an option for them.
Our 210 points will get us 2 savanna view studios at AKV the first week of December---this room OOP runs about $3000, our DVC allows us to get this room for about $1100 a year once we pay the initial buy in off, and we pay this fee each year for the life of the contract. Not bad.
