Does anyone know when this movie will be rated? I can't quite decide if I think it's going to be too scary for 7/8 year olds or not...thinking about a movie bday party, but don't know how to plan until I know more about this movie...

I don't believe it has been rated yet--I would imagine it being a PG rated movie.

based on the preview I'm guessing it'll be PG-13 and too scary for that age...

When I first saw the trailer on-line, I felt sort of "Meh" but I saw the trailer in 3-D in front of Avatar, and it looked stunning in 3-D. (And honestly, for me, 3-D has not particularly impressed to date.) So, I am now amongst those looking forward to seeing this.

We saw the preview and my DD -8 said she did not want to see another scary Disney movie. She said it looks scary. She is referring to A Christmas Carol as the other scary movie - we had to leave in the middle. I am not sure what the angle is, but I sure hope they make it clear that it may be scary. Not Disney, but movie related - we went to see Where the Wild Things Are with her, without reading the review and left with her in tears - I wish there was something that forced them to advertise the movies for what they really are - just my opinion - tired of paying for them to walk out. It also would help if I didn't have a child that was afraid of everything.

thanks everyone for the feedback...i want to do a movie party for dd, but there's not much to choose from! i could do the new miley cyrus movie the last song...any opinions on that? it's rated pg also, do you think it would be too mature of a plot for 8 year olds?

I'm betting it will be a PG rating, and may or may not be too scary for that age. I would wait until it comes out and read some reviews specifically for parents, that way you could get a better idea of what you're dealing with. I also recommend the same advice for the Miley Cyrus movie, though. You just never know what they'll decide to sneak into an otherwise seemingly harmless film, kwim?

ETA: OP, when are you looking to do this birthday party? The Diary of a Wimpy Kid movie is coming out the following week (March 19, I think). It should be pretty harmless, with the exception of some possible "bathroom humor".

I just spent 20 minutes searching for the rating. I saw a post on IMDB that says it will officially rated PG.

i just posted this same question on some other disney forums i belong to because my friend wanted to do the same thing for her 8yrs DD's bday....i am not sure how old your DD is but i will cut and paste some of the reviews i got from others, i hope this helps:

*The book is really good, but it isn't for 7 and 8 year olds. The Miley they will see in the movie is not the Miley on Hannah Montana. I don't want to give anything else away, but I'm pretty sure they wouldn't come away from it feeling good*

*I saw the previews yesterday when we went to see Edge of Darkness. It is not a kiddie movie. It's more of a movie you would see on the Lifetime Channel. It did look good though. A hanky movie*

*The book was really good and I imagine Miley will do well in her role. It's been reported that this is her breakout into more adult roles. This movie will not be for kids.*

I haven't read the book, but I can tell you this:
They showed a clip during the Miley Cyrus concert. We ran into some friends of DD's from school after the concert. One of the moms (whose opinion I trust) had just finished the book and said her daughter (who is 10) will NOT be seeing the movie. She was a little unhappy they had promo'd it during the concert

yea, i saw the pg rating too...

we'll be inviting about 15 seven to eight year old girls. i would feel horrible if one of them got so scared that they had to leave. last thing i want parents to think is that i am being irresponsible in my movie choice! i will take my dd to see it, she'll love it, but of course i know my own dd and what she can handle...

the miley cyrus movie i am sure would be a hit just b/c it's miley cyrus. but the plot involves divorced parents and a tense relationship between daughter and dad...not exactly an uplifting story.

a pp mentioned previewing the movies myself first, but with a movie party i'll have to have the date reserved and the invitations sent out well in advance of the party so there will be no time to do that. i would plan a party on the weekend a movie opens so that we don't run into a situation where some of the kids have already seen it.

if i do her party later, we could always consider furry vengeance or oceans. i wonder if the kids would find oceans entertaining or boring? any input on those?

turkeymama, i had thought of the diary of a wimpy kid, too. it does fit in with our timeline, but i had read some unfavorable things about it on various places on the internet. one comment was that kids were talking about smoking cigarettes. again, our dd reads those books but we talk to her about not acting like the characters!!! why aren't there any good G movies out there anymore?!

Thank you for posting this, i'll have to pass it to my friend who is looking for a movie for her DD's 8th bday

I haven't read anything about it yet. I just happened to stumble upon it when I was looking at some other release dates. My DD reads the books too, so I'm sure she'll have some interest in the movie. I'll have to keep an eye out for the reviews. We rarely go see a movie during the first weekend of showing. That way I can look at plenty before hand. In your case, I see that isn't practical for your party planning.

thank you everyone for your input! i think i've decided not to do the movie party idea. there just isn't anything safe (IMO) that is coming out around dd's birthday.

i think instead we're going to do a small sleepover with a camping theme. maybe set up the tent in the house, roast marshmallows, etc. i think the girls will love it, i was just hoping to do something 'easy' this year - so much for that LOL!

anyone with kids having birthdays in late april, there is a cute movie called Furry Vengeance coming out april 30th. looks real cute and i'm sure will be a hit with the kids. Also, summer birthdays are lucky, the Ramona and Beezus movie comes out and the star is Selena Gomez! What girl won't want to go see that?!

i personally will take dd to the alice in wonderland movie and i wouldn't hesitate to take her to diary of a wimpy kid, either. but i'm her mom and feel okay making that judgement call for her and i can also talk to her about real vs. fiction and funny in a movie as opposed to rude and mean in real life! the miley cyrus movie i'm not sure about...the more i hear and read the more i don't think it's a kids movie.

again, many thanks to all of those who helped with their advice!

Sounds like a fun idea that you've come up with.

I'm with you on the movies. I'm pretty conservative with what I let the kids watch (by my standards), but I discovered that my kids are allowed to watch way more than their friends. I'd probably run into similar issues if I tried to do a movie birthday party.

My son saw a preview two nights ago and came to tell me the movie is PG. I do not intend to take any of my children to see it - they have all said it is too scary looking. I hope they put a disclaimer that it might scare young children.
